Tenure-Track Faculty Position in Microbiology

The Department of Microbiology and Immunology at the University of Mississippi Medical Center in Jackson, MS invites applications for a tenure-track faculty position at the assistant or associate professor ranks. There are presently 14 faculty members in the department with research interests that include bacterial pathogenesis and population genetics, comparative immunology, virology, and molecular parasitology. Efforts are underway to recruit new faculty in the area of bacteriology. Of particular interest are research programs with translational potential that complement existing strengths in antimicrobial resistance, pathogen and microbiome interactions with host, and bacterial genomics. A successful candidate will be expected to maintain an extramurally funded research program, mentor graduate students, and teach in the department's graduate, medical, and dental courses. Faculty salaries are currently 100% supported from institutional funds, and graduate student stipends are supported for three years. Departmental facilities and resources include a BSL-3 laboratory, a bacterial surveillance laboratory, and common large-equipment rooms. The Medical Center has core facilities for research with animals, imaging, microscopy, flow cytometry, and genomics, among others. The University of Mississippi Medical Center is the state's only academic medical center. The Medical Center includes the Schools of Medicine, Dentistry, Nursing, Health Related Professions, Population Health, and Graduate Studies in Health Sciences, along with four interconnecting hospitals and a variety of clinics that serve the entire state. A formal collaboration with the Mayo Clinic has recently expanded the Medical Center's clinical research potential. The city of Jackson and surrounding areas offer a reasonable cost of living along with recreational and cultural opportunities.
