Assistant/Associate Professor - Engineering Immune Responses

The Department of Veterinary and Animal Sciences (VAS) ( at the University of Massachusetts Amherst invites applications to fill a tenure-track Assistant/Associate Professor position in the thematic area of "Engineering Immune Responses" with the goals of preventing the establishment of disease, developing treatments for existing diseases and creating conditions that improve human and animal health through the application of quantitative approaches. Applicants with quantitative skills and experience in big data analysis as it pertains to cancer immunology, infectious diseases, vaccine development or interaction with microbiota are particularly encouraged to apply. Use of quantitative methodologies to assess single cell function, flow cytometry, and/or genomics and transcriptomics information for evaluating the immune response or developing models to predict immune responses are preferred. The successful applicant will be expected to establish an extramurally funded research program and to contribute to undergraduate and graduate teaching and advising, consistent with the teaching responsibilities of our faculty.   • Applicants must have a Ph.D., D.V.M. /Ph.D., or M.D. /Ph.D. and have developed, or the potential to establish a vigorous independent research program in one or more of the designated areas of immunology.
  • Research with a translational component is considered an advantage, as is and an interest in veterinary systems, but is not required.
  • Under exceptional circumstances, highly qualified candidates at other ranks may receive consideration.

Additional Information:

 The appointment will be in the Department of Veterinary and Animal Sciences in the College of Natural Sciences ( The Department has a strong commitment to Veterinary and Biomedical Research and to Veterinary and Animal Science undergraduate and graduate education. It is housed in modern research facilities, has an interactive faculty with strengths in immunology, reproduction and development, and environmental toxicology. It has excellent core facilities, and is well-integrated into the University of Massachusetts life sciences research community. The VAS Immunology group is collaborative with focuses on the interface of the "self-immune system" and "pathogen-immune system"; it is well-published and has obtained substantial federal, foundation, and biotech industry funding. Faculty have access to the life science research infrastructure and core facilities of the Institute of Applied Life Sciences (IALS) (see for more details). IALS and the UMass Amherst campus are committed to the development of translational research programs and to fostering interactions within the industry.
