The University of Wisconsin-Madison Institute for Molecular Virology (IMV), in collaboration with the Departments of Pathobiological Sciences, Medical Microbiology & Immunology, Oncology, or Biochemistry, seek to hire a tenure-track Assistant Professor. The faculty hire is expected to develop a robust research program aimed at generating new insights into RNA biology during viral infection.
This faculty position is an academic (9-month), tenure-track (junior) position, which requires a PhD in a biological or relevant physical science. The area of focus includes the study of RNA biology in the context of viral infection.
Candidates should display a productive record of established scholarship of national and international significance in RNA biology during viral infection, including, but not limited to, RNA structural analysis, epitranscriptomics, and RNA-protein interactions. Candidates should demonstrate an ability to work in a collaborative, interdisciplinary environment.
This position is one of a three-part synergistic hiring initiative, "The Metastructures of Viral Infection", which focuses on nucleic acid modifications and structural interactions driven by viral infection. The three faculty positions will expand and complement the Madison Virology Program (MVP). This particular faculty hire will develop a research program geared toward understanding the connections between viral infection and RNA critical for viral replication or persistence, including host or viral RNA structure, function and post-transcriptional modifications. Preference will be given to candidates working on RNA viruses that cause disease in animals or humans, especially emerging or zoonotic pathogens.
In keeping with Madison traditions of collaboration and highly successful joint appointments, the IMV and the tenure home department will act as interactive partners in this hire and will mutually support this position with substantial laboratory facilities, diverse biological, biochemical and virology collaborators, high quality students, and other resources. The successful candidate will become an IMV Member and an MVP affiliate, joining a vibrant community of virologists, complementing and strengthening the UW's outstanding breadth in biological research. Because this is a cluster hire position, there are expectations of synergy with additional new hires in the areas of Viral DNA Superstructure, and Cryo-EM-dependent Structural Virology. It is anticipated that the faculty member will pursue future federal program project grant applications in conjunction with other viral epigenetic and structural virology faculty colleagues on campus. The primary department affiliation and tenure home, among the above listed departments, will be determined based on research scope with significant input from the candidate.
