The Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution invites exceptional candidates to apply for the executive position of Deputy Director and Vice President for Research. This position reports directly to the President and Director and is a member of both Senior Administration and Staff Council. You will lead the five (5) research departments (Biology, Marine Chemistry and Geochemistry, Marine Geology and Geophysics, Applied Ocean Physics and Engineering, and Physical Oceanography; and the Marine Policy Center in maintaining the scientific integrity and enhancing the research and engineering excellence of the Institution. More broadly, you will lead the Institution on many strategic fronts while fostering the entrepreneurial activities of its scientific and technical staff. 

You will develop long-range strategies focused on balancing a sound budget process with the development of new research opportunities. Inherent in your success will be a deep understanding and appreciation of the scientific, engineering, and technical capabilities and potential of the staff that will propel their work into new areas. You will promote change and innovative thinking to improve decision-making and administrative processes, balancing continuity with new approaches.

You will be a leader known as someone who is fair with a forward-thinking style grounded in an ability to listen to and share ideas, develop capabilities, and mentor others. You will enable and enhance the entrepreneurial potential of staff through strategic allocation of internal resources.

You will ensure that the work climate and culture of the Institution is inclusive, fair, and considerate.  You will strive to increase diversity of staff through effective recruitment within the framework of the Institution.

You will build effective relationships throughout the Institution and within the community at large, seeking to understand diverse perspectives so as to effectively mediate conflict by leveraging common purpose. You will build strong relationships with funding agencies and other funding sources, and advocate for the Institution at all levels. You will develop and promote partnerships with researchers in the broader Woods Hole scientific community, as well as with other national and international organizations.

Applicants should have a doctoral degree with significant marine-related research accomplishments, familiarity with field and sea-going research, proven skills in leadership, research administration, management, and communications, and experience working with federal agencies.
