■ Introduction

Soonchunhyang University owns a long tradition of medical education and research through the Soonchunhyang Medical School and four affiliated Medical Centers. Soonchunhyang Institute of Medi-Bio Science (SIMS) was founded in 2013 as a major initiative to establish a Biomedical Research Center of Excellence within the Soonchunhyang University.

The primary mission of SIMS is to play an active central role in leading the basic biomedical research at the Soonchunhyang University, promote interdisciplinary research programs with other science and technology researchers at the university, and create translational/clinical research initiatives in collaboration with clinicians at the Soonchunhyang Medical Centers. Beyond these missions, SIMS aims to play a keystone role in creating and developing a Biomedical Research and Development Cluster in the Cheonan city area in coming years. Furthermore, SIMS thrives to establish active international collaborations with foreign biomedical research institutes, especially the ones in Asia, and sets the ambitious goal to become one of the premium biomedical research institutes in Asia within the foreseeable future.

■ Research at SIMS

Since its inception, the Soonchunhyang University has invested over 40 million US dollars for a new research building, infrastructure and personnel for SIMS.  The new “state of the art” research building located near the Soonchunhyang Medical Center in Cheonan city opened in September, 2015. The research building is equipped with SPF animal facility and major research instruments to perform a high-end biomedical research. Currently, SIMS has 15 outstanding faculty members and plans to increase total faculty up to 20 members in the next couple of years.

The faculty research encompasses a broad area of biomedical science with a strong emphasis on stem cell biology, regenerative medicine, metabolic diseases and cancer.

■ Graduate Studies at SIMS

SIMS is committed to groom the stellar scientists through our educational investment who will become future leaders in the biomedical research in their native countries and active participants in internationally cooperative research projects. To achieve this educational mission, our Graduate Program for Integrated Biomedical Science offers excellent biomedical science education and research training. We emphasize interdisciplinary training that integrates basic, translational and clinical research.

Our program is strongly grounded in collegial, collaborative, and culture-rich atmosphere. The students and faculty members closely interact through many formal and informal activities in our program, including journal clubs, student research talks and SIMS seminar and Retreat. Considering the international representation of the student body in the program, all lectures and seminars are given in English. Currently, more than 50 graduate students from many Asian countries and Korea are enrolled to pursue their M.S. and Ph.D. degrees.
