Assistant Professor Metabolism

POSITION DESCRIPTION: The Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology at Oklahoma State University is seeking applicants for a 9-month, full-time, tenure-track position (80% research and 20% teaching) in the area of Metabolism.  This position is the first of 4 positions that will be filled in the next 3 years. The successful applicant will be expected to develop a nationally funded, independent research program within the broad field of metabolism. The appointee will also be expected to contribute to the department’s undergraduate and graduate teaching programs through course instruction (1-2 courses per year), and be actively involved in the department’s undergraduate research program, in addition to our research mission of training graduate students. The appointee will also be expected to seek and secure extramural research funding through the preparation of manuscripts and grant proposals.

The fundamental mission of the Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology is the discovery and dissemination of new knowledge through pioneering research and teaching, through which we strive to achieve the goals of the Division of Agricultural Sciences and Natural Resources (DASNR). The individual hired for this position is encouraged to collaborate with other DASNR researchers, and provide expertise in the area of metabolism to enhance current DASNR research efforts.


Exposure to biological and chemical hazards common to biochemistry and molecular biology research laboratories. Person hired into this position is required to develop safety protocols and SOP's as required by the techniques employed in their laboratory, and maintain chemical inventory and chemical MSDS's. They are also required to abide by all the research and workplace safety rules and requirements set forth by OSU EHS, biosafety, radiation safety and IACUC.  

Work at the computer, lifting of minor packages as required, maintenance of clean laboratory space free of clutter and maintenance of laboratory equipment.  


  • Develop a nationally recognized research program in metabolism, that is funded through multiyear competitive grants funded through the NIH/NSF/USDA and/or related institutions.  Seeking industrial financial support is also encouraged
  • As research program grows, seek to develop an applied research horizon approach in order to produce intellectual property and patents.
  • Publish research results in peer-reviewed journals and produce review articles on your subject matter. Give presentations and invited lectures at national and international venues.
  • Maintain a research laboratory that follows all safety protocols and SOP’s as required by the techniques employed in their laboratory, and maintain chemical inventory and chemical SDS’s. They are also required to abide by all the research and workplace safety rules and requirements set forth by OSU EHS, biosafety, radiation safety and IACUC.
  • Develop productive multidisciplinary working relationships with faculty that have similar research interests from across the University. Developing productive research collaborations that impact agriculture are desired.
  • Teach an graduate and undergraduate course in metabolism, the undergraduate course should ideally be biomedical in nature and directed to pre-health students seeking to enter post graduate health programs. 
  • Serve as an advisor and research supervisor for undergraduates, M.S., Ph.D. and Postdoctoral students. These students should be taught to publish, prepare and present research presentations, and produce predoctoral and postdoctoral grants as appropriate
  • Provide service to your discipline by serving on grant review panels, on journal editorial boards and with scientific organizations and meeting committees.
  • Serve on University, College and Department Committees.
  • Educational outreach to the local communities is also strongly encouraged.

QUALIFICATIONS: Requirements for the position include a Ph.D. in Biochemistry, Molecular Biology, or a relevant field, at least 2 years of postdoctoral experience, and an excellent publication record.  Applicants must be committed to excellence in both research and teaching.  Preference will be given to individuals with excellent written and oral communications skills, excellent interpersonal skills, evidence of research success, a passion for teaching both undergraduate and graduate students and the ability to work on teams and assume leadership roles.  Preference will also be given to individuals conducting research that is translatable to important agricultural models and public health.

SALARY:  Competitive and commensurate with education, training and experience.  The appointment also comes with competitive start-up funds and ample laboratory space.
