Chair, Department of Anesthesiology

Washington University School of Medicine seeks nominations and invites applications for the Chair of the Department of Anesthesiology. Founded in 1971, the Department, now home to 204 primary faculty members, strives to foster an academic culture in which clinical care, research, and education are seamlessly integrated. The Chair of the Department of Anesthesiology will have overall responsibility for strategy, clinical and educational program development, and operations within anesthesiology.


The Anesthesia care team at Washington University is made up of world-renowned specialist anesthesiologists, 75 anesthesiology residents, 32 fellows, 108 certified registered nurse anesthetists, 54 Nurse Practitioners and Physician Assistants, and 82 clinical administrators. With approximately 80,000 surgical procedures conducted annually at six Washington University affiliated hospitals the Department is uniquely situated to train expert consultants in anesthesiology and perioperative medicine as well as foster the development of physician-scientists. Furthermore, The Department is heavily funded by grants from the National Institutes of Health and for over a decade has ranked in the top five in NIH dollars with over $14 million in FY18.

The Search Committee, co-chaired by Dr. Regis O'Keefe, Chair of Orthopaedic Surgery and Dr. Gary Silverman, Chair of Pediatric, invites inquiries, nominations, and applications for the position of Chair, Department of Anesthesiology, at Washington University School of Medicine. Drs. O'Keefe and Silverman, and the Search Committee are partnering in this search with Russell Reynolds Associates; Charles Falcone, MD and Ben Grover, co-lead the Russell Reynolds Associates team.
