The Department of Bioengineering at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign (UIUC) is experiencing a period of unprecedented growth, with expansion of our faculty and undergraduate student body over the next 5 years. With the recent completion of extensive building renovations and the launch of our new engineering-driven Carle-Illinois College of Medicine on the UIUC campus, there are many opportunities to impact both fundamental and translational research. To support these aspirations, the Department seeks a full-time Bioengineering faculty member for a tenure-track or tenured position in the broad area of computational bioengineering: including computational systems biology, computational genomics, computational neuroscience, bioinformatics, or other related areas.
A successful candidate will be expected to be a leader of highly interdisciplinary research, be a visionary for the future of engineering in medicine and biology, and perform academic duties associated with our B.S., M.S., Ph.D. and M.D. educational programs.
Minimum qualifications include an earned doctorate (preferred degree and/or demonstrated accomplishments in Engineering, Computer Science, the Physical Sciences, or related fields), outstanding academic credentials, and the ability to teach effectively at both the graduate and undergraduate levels. Dual-degree candidates with an M.D. are encouraged to apply, as the opportunity for a joint appointment within our network of partnering clinical institutions is available.
A successful candidate will also have the unique opportunity for a leadership role in our newly established engineering-driven Carle-Illinois College of Medicine, the first of its kind with a curriculum integrating engineering from the start. An appointment at the rank of Assistant or Associate Professor will be a priority. Ideal candidates include those who demonstrate evidence of a commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion through research, teaching, and/or service endeavors. Rank and salary will be commensurate with qualifications. Start date is expected in the Fall of 2019, however this is negotiable.
A qualified senior candidate may also be considered for a tenured full Professor position as part of the Grainger Engineering Breakthroughs Initiative, which is backed by a $100-million gift from the Grainger Foundation. Over the next few years, more than 35 new endowed professorships and chairs will be established, which will provide incredible opportunities for world-renowned researchers.
