Director, Center for Global Health
The National Cancer Institute (NCI) is seeking an innovative leader to serve as its Director, Center for Global Health (CGH). This position reports to the NCI Director and provides vision and leadership to the global cancer community, including supporting global cancer research partnerships and collaboration across the NCI, NIH, other Federal agencies and Non-Governmental Organizations (NGOs) to achieve mutually beneficial goals in cancer research and control internationally. For more information about CGH please go to https://www.cancer.gov/about-nci/organization/cgh
The Director oversees a multi-national, multi-institutional research program that meets the ethical and regulatory requirements of the NIH, DHHS, and the U.S. government, as well as the ethical and regulatory requirements of all the participating countries. The incumbent provides leadership and oversight for studies of health systems for the prevention and treatment of cancer; relevant work in the laboratory sciences and epidemiology; research initiatives for cancer etiology, pathogenesis, prevention, diagnosis, and treatment; and behavioral studies that contribute to the control of cancer in both developing and developed countries. The incumbent promotes cancer control planning and implementation to multiple partners and stakeholders. The incumbent engages with U.S. Embassy staff in relevant countries to brief them on NCI activities and garner support as needed. The incumbent also oversees scientific programs and provides technical assistance in a variety of income settings throughout the world. Although successful applicants are likely to specialize in a particular domain of basic, clinical, or population science, the work requires an understanding of the global context and international variation in cancer, including its prognosis, and information derived from epidemiologic, prevention and diagnostic studies; possible benefits anticipated from treatments; and the risks and benefits associated with preventive strategies, diagnostic procedures, and therapeutic interventions. This position manages an annual operating budget of approximately $12 million and a total of 40 federal and contractor staff. The NCI portfolio includes grants and projects in 126 countries around the world and all 7 world regions.
One of the key functions of the Center is to facilitate coordination of NCI’s international research collaborations across the entire organization, engaging with NCI’s divisions, offices, and centers in priority setting, implementation, integration, and evaluation of global health activities. Collaborations supported by NCI’s extramural grants and intramural programs are leveraged by the Center to support and increase, where appropriate, the impact of science and health diplomacy.
The Center also relies on its partnerships with the 70 NCI-Designated Cancer Centers, the NIH Fogarty International Center, and other government partners to provide cancer research training and technical assistance, placing highest priority on those endeavors that are most likely to yield significant scientific advances that can inform global public health.
The successful applicant will have a commitment to global health and to improving well-being in both developed and developing countries. The applicant should have the ability to engage with international organizations and global health philanthropies, while never losing sight of NCI’s core mission – conducting and supporting outstanding science.
