Director, Center for Research on Ingredient Safety

Michigan State University seeks a scientifically distinguished individual eager to continue to build a national center focused on advancing public good through increased research, training and risk communication in, and understanding of, ingredients in food and consumer-product safety. The individual will serve as the Director of the Center for Research on Ingredient Safety (CRIS), a program for food and consumer product ingredient safety that broadly builds capability in ingredient safety-related research, training and risk communication. CRIS is an academic, science-based center that serves as a leading source for information on the safe use of chemical ingredients in consumer products including foods, beverages, cosmetics and household consumer products.

The Director of the Center for Research on Ingredient Safety will be a rising or established figure in the field of food toxicology and chemical ingredient safety or a closely related discipline, with a visionary approach to scholarship, leadership and a demonstrated track record of managing projects and teams from their establishment to stable growth and productivity.  Ability to communicate effectively with diverse stakeholders is also a requirement of the position.

The demands of the position are such that the Director will need a reputation of national prominence within his or her discipline. At the same time, they will also possess experience in interdisciplinary programming and will have built a wide retinue of partnerships with a variety of stakeholders.

A terminal degree and experience in a relevant field is required, with preference given to food toxicology, consumer product safety or closely related fields. The successful candidate must bring many of the following qualifications and attributes to the position:

Leadership and Management Skills

»  Persuasive,  compelling and intellectual leadership demonstrated through the development of  partnerships to deliver successful interdisciplinary research and outreach programs;

»  A person of high energy, integrity, enthusiastic optimism, and the perseverance to bring an ambitious enterprise to fruition;

»  Demonstrated ability to attract partners, raise funds, generate enthusiasm, and obtain and maintain support for programmatic initiatives;

»  Proven capacity to contribute to the development and then implement a focused, strategic vision in a rapidly evolving scientific and consumer driven environment, with an entrepreneurial  spirit and a record of building scholarly excellence through collaboration and coalition building;

»  Experience managing complex programs with a track record of success in a complex environment;

»  Open and consultative leadership; and a collaborative style that fosters partnerships with university, government, consumer groups and private sector partners to build consensus and a world-class enterprise;

»  Possess a professional network of  contacts across sectors (e.g.,  government, industry,  academia and consumer groups) that can assist in  meeting the goals and objectives of CRIS.

Communication Skills

»  Excellent communication  skills   to  inspire others and cultivate key external constituencies in  public agencies, the private sector and with consumer groups;

»  Ability to convey crisp and compelling messages to a wide range of technical and non-technical audiences;

»  Recognition of importance and willingness to communicate through modern social media is required.
