Job Duties

• Teach lecture/laboratory courses in Cellular and Molecular Biology, Genetics and Evolution for Biology majors

• Teach general biology lecture/laboratory courses for non-majors

• Use and interdisciplinary and multidisciplinary approach to provide students majoring in Biology with the advanced knowledge and skill sets needed for continued studies in Field Biology, or the Laboratory Sciences, and to support future studies in Medicine, research, or in a related science and/or health care profession

• Teach lecture/laboratory courses in General Biology for non-major students with a broad and current perspective of Biology

• Provide high quality instruction while also providing mentorship to the diverse Santa Monica College student population

• Maintain academic currency and expertise on scientific topics, developments and advancements through the review of current literature and/or research

• Collaborate with colleagues in the majors and non-majors courses to continually update and strengthen the Biology programs at Santa Monica College

• Demonstrate flexibility with the teaching schedule to accommodate departmental needs

• Assure the highest quality of instruction by participating in course and materials development

• Maintain office hours

• Participate in departmental activities, including, but not limited to, departmental meetings, faculty evaluations, staff development programs, academic and career advisement, and college and faculty committees and other activities

• Commitment to an equitable student experience

• Effective teaching of students with diverse learning styles

 

Minimum Qualifications

Master's Degree in any biological science

       OR

A Bachelor's Degree in any biological science AND a Master's Degree in one of the following:

 

• Biochemistry

• Biophysics

• Marine Science

• or the equivalent

 

Preferred Qualifications

Ph.D. or Ed.D training or experience in cellular biology, molecular biology, genetics and or evolution.

• Demonstrated skills in, and enthusiasm for, teaching biological science courses at the college level

• Computer literacy and experience developing technology-related teaching methods

• Knowledge of experiential learning and interactive teaching methods

• Demonstrated commitment to equity, diversity and inclusion

• Demonstrated interest in , and aptitude for, teaching students of varied levels of preparation

Pay Philosophy

Starting salaries for FT Faculty are based on a combination of experience and educational achievement.  Initial placement is within the starting salary range.  Further advancements are based on longevity and educational growth.
