The University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) School of Medicine invites applications for full time tenure-track faculty positions in the Department of Neurobiology. We are seeking candidates who apply innovative approaches to investigate the development, function, and malfunction of the nervous system at all levels of analysis. Appointments may be at any rank.

UAB is a research-intensive university ranked in the top 10 among public universities for NIH funding. The Department of Neurobiology (http://www.uab.edu/medicine/neurobiology/) is entering its 21st year as a well- funded department at UAB. Faculty are housed in custom-designed laboratories and offices in the Shelby Interdisciplinary Biomedical Research Building and nearby Civitan International Research Center. The department has strengths in the molecular mechanisms of neuronal function, synaptic communication and plasticity, and animal models of disease. Faculty use technical approaches spanning molecular, genetic, cellular, systems, and behavioral levels of analysis. The Department of Neurobiology provides competitive start-up packages, modern laboratory space, excellent core facilities, and extensive opportunities for collaborative research and participation in undergraduate, graduate and medical training programs. UAB is strongly committed to neuroscience research, and the department will expand over the next few years under new leadership. A broad and collegial environment for neuroscience research is facilitated by the UAB Comprehensive Neuroscience Center, a network of over 200 basic, translational and clinical faculty from 23 departments.

A record 20,942 students were enrolled at UAB in Fall 2017. The School of Medicine has more than 1,200 full time faculty and approximately 1,200 medical and graduate students. UAB is the largest employer in the state of Alabama with operating revenues of $3 billion. Birmingham is a cosmopolitan city at the heart of a metropolitan area with a population of 1.1 million people. It is a rich cultural center and progressive community with low cost of living, moderate weather, and ample outdoor activities.

Successful candidates must have a Ph.D. and/or M.D in a related field and a strong record of research accomplishments. Faculty members are expected to establish active independent research programs and to participate in education of professional, graduate and undergraduate students.
