The Director of Human Health Science and Policy is responsible for development, implementation and management of effective science and regulatory policy strategies on human health science and policy in support of CropLife America’s objectives, including matters that impact both pesticides and crop technology products.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Monitor, review and analyze all relevant human health regulatory initiatives, including the identification of emerging policy issues, to determine potential impacts on the crop protection industry and communicate issues and solutions to CLA Leadership and members.
    • Includes existing and emerging federal human health regulations under the Federal Insecticide, Fungicide, and Rodenticide Act, the Food Quality Protection Act, the Federal Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act and others, as appropriate.
  • Actively lead and participate on multi-disciplinary teams to develop strategic plans addressing current and emerging human health issues.
  • Propose and execute strategic approaches for resolution of human health issues and implement strategies.
    • Initiate and maintain relationships and effectively work with key regulatory agencies and/or allies.
    • Ensure policy issues are presented for CLA internal, agency discussion, and/or public comment.
    • Seek and coordinate member assistance to identify, apply and communicate (in a timely fashion) sound scientific principles to mitigate misinformation and non-scientific interpretations of pesticide issues.
  • Initiate and maintain relationships with key stakeholders and allied organizations to address specific issues of importance to CropLife America, including the ability to solicit commitments from such organizations. 
  • Provide organizational and technical support for CLA technical work groups, and issue management teams, as assigned.
  • Prepare effective advocacy materials including background papers, issue briefs, talking points, amendments, correspondence, and testimony for use by CropLife America representatives and allied organizations.
  • Ensure effective communication with CropLife America members and CLA staff on status of relevant science and regulatory policy initiatives.

Education and Work Experience

  • An advanced degree is required in public health/public health policy, environmental science and policy, or agricultural sciences with emphasis on chemistry/biochemistry, toxicology, pharmacology, or human risk assessment.
  • Five to seven years of experience in agricultural science, biochemistry, toxicology or human health risk assessment and/or US regulatory affairs. 

Job Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Strong verbal and written communication skills including the ability to distill complex and/or technical information into concise, effective and influential communications.
  • Strong analytical, interpretive, evaluative and constructive thinking skills.
  • Strong project management skills.
  • Working understanding of the science related to human health issues, including risk assessment, endocrine disruption, nanotechnology, and epidemiology, and how these disciplines are used in a regulatory context.   
  • Skill with communication of scientific issues and regulatory initiatives on behalf of the crop protection and technology industry.
