Research Assistant Scientist, CAP Project Manager

This is a 12-month non-tenure-accruing position that will be 90% research (Florida Agricultural Experiment Station) and 10% extension available in the Horticultural Sciences Department, Institute of Food and Agricultural Sciences, at the University of Florida. This assignment may change in accordance with the needs of the unit. This position is 100% grant-funded, and duties will include project management of a sweet corn coordinated agricultural project (CAP) and leading research on biotechnology solutions to improve sweet corn germination and emergence in cold conditions. For extension, the faculty member will develop scientific content for a Sweet Corn CAP website. Project management duties include drafting progress reports to NIFA and the project advisory group, coordinated manuscripts with the co-investigators and project team as well as patent and plant variety protection applications developed by project at the University of Florida. The faculty member will also coordinate project meetings, monitor expenditures, and serve as scientific and administrative liaison for the project advisory group. This is a non-tenure accruing position, with contract extension dependent on successful solicitation of sufficient grant funding to support salary and programmatic needs.

The successful candidate will participate actively in undergraduate and graduate education by chairing and serving on graduate committees, supervising thesis, dissertation and undergraduate research, and publishing research results with students. Faculty are encouraged to participate in professional development activities related to teaching and advising.

Because of the IFAS land-grant mission, all faculty are expected to be supportive of and engaged in all three mission areas-Research, Teaching and Extension-regardless of the assignment split specified in the position description.



A doctorate (foreign equivalent acceptable) in Plant Genetics, Breeding, Molecular Biology, Biochemistry, or a closely related discipline is required. Experience in federal grant reporting and manuscript preparation is required. Candidates should have demonstrated skills in verbal and written communication, teamwork, interpersonal relationships, and procurement of extramural funding. Candidates must be supportive of the mission of the Land-Grant system. Candidates must also have a commitment to IFAS core values of excellence, diversity, global involvement, and accountability.


Postdoctoral experience is desirable.
