Assistant/Associate Professor; Center for Pediatric Research in Obesity & Metabolism, Pittsburgh, PA

The Center for Pediatric Research in Obesity and Metabolism (CPROM) at the UPMC Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh (CHP), and the Department of Pediatrics at the University of Pittsburgh (Pitt) is recruiting a scientist in obesity and metabolism to fill an academic faculty position. The position is full-time in the tenure stream at Assistant/Associate Professor rank, commensurate with the candidate’s knowledge, skills and experience. Applicants must have a Ph.D. and/or M.D. degree. Investigators in the CPROM will seek to answer essential questions underlying adipocyte biology, beta-cell function, the role of inflammation, and investigate mechanisms responsible for obesity-associated co-morbidities such as prediabetes and type 2 diabetes, fatty liver disease, sleep apnea, polycystic ovary syndrome, brain functional and structural alterations, and neurocognitive function among others.

The CPROM led by Silva Arslanian, M.D, Scientific Director, is located within the Department of Pediatrics at the UPMC CHP in the Rangos Research Center. For the eighth consecutive year, CHP was ranked 9th in the U.S. News & World Report Honor Roll of America's "Best Children's Hospitals". CHP has a Pediatric Clinical and Translational Research Center (PCTRC) which provides dedicated research space and skilled research nursing for patient-oriented research. The PCTRC is part of the Clinical and Translational Science Institute (CTSI) of the University of Pittsburgh. The University holds >$400 million of NIH funding and ranks fifth among more than 3,000 entities that receive NIH support. Pitt offers an extremely collegial environment, with expertise in pediatric and adult diabetes, obesity, metabolic surgery, exercise physiology and many other related disciplines.

The ideal candidate for this position will have research experience in the fields of obesity, metabolism, nutrition, and pathophysiology of obesity complications. Ph.D. and M.D-scientists must have performed sufficient postdoctoral research and have demonstrated outstanding promise to build an independent research program. For patient-oriented research, focus in pediatrics is favored. Physician-scientists are preferred to be pediatric endocrinologists, but other subspecialties are welcomed too. It is expected that the candidate at the Assistant Professor level have evidence of early career extramural funding (NIH K grant or equivalent), and the candidate at the Associate Professor rank have an independent extramurally funded research program.  A strong potential for academic productivity, research mentorship/teaching, and programmatic leadership is required as part of the mission of the School of Medicine.

The position includes a competitive salary, laboratory space, and a competitive start-up package, and is available immediately. Applicants should send curriculum vitae, a statement of current and future research interests/activities and three letters of recommendation to: Silva Arslanian, MD, Richard L.
