We invite individuals with a strong background in neuroscience to inquire about joining our highly multidisciplinary program focused on blast-related mild traumatic brain injury (mTBI) at the VA Medical Center and University of Washington in Seattle, WA.

We are working to understand the underlying mechanisms linking repetitive mTBI to chronic behavioral, cognitive, and neuropathological disorders, such as chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE). Our multi-disciplinary team of basic and clinical researchers are working on several tightly interwoven approaches:

  • Battlefield and translationally relevant animal modeling of blast-induced mTBI.
  • Multi-modal neuroimaging (PET, DTI, resting and task-based functional MRI) in Veterans with blast-related mTBI.
  • Multi-modal neuroimaging (PET, DTI) in blast-exposed animals.
  • Behavioral and cognitive impairments in Veterans with blast-related mTBI.
  • In-depth translationally anchored behavioral analyses in TBI animals addressing affective disorders, PTSD-like behaviors, and sleep disturbances.
  • Real-time in vivo dopamine release using fast-scan voltammetry in mice.
  • Real-time in vivo two-photon imaging in animal mTBI models.
  • Light Sheet microscopy.
  • In-depth neuropathology in blast-exposed animals AND in human cases with histories of blast-related mTBI.
  • mTBI biomarker discovery using flow/mass cytometry, Meso-Scale, exosomes, and microbiome-related proteins derived from cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) and plasma from Veterans with blast-related mTBI and from blast-exposed animals.
