Discipline-Based Education Research (DBER) in Chemistry or Physics & Astronomy
The University of Utah aspires to become a center for world-class scholarship in math and science education. Our long-term goal is to have education scholars embedded in each of the four departments in the College of Science. In the current phase of this multi-year strategic hiring initiative, we are seeking up to three faculty members who could be appointed in Chemistry, Mathematics, and/or Physics & Astronomy; joint appointments are possible. Successful candidates will work as a collaborative team of education-focused scholars to advance two priorities: 1) improving and enhancing undergraduate education in math and science; and 2) increasing the number and/or improving the efficacy of K-12 math and science teachers. Selected candidates will be affiliated with the Center for Science and Mathematics Education (CSME) and will work closely with other members of the cluster as well as existing faculty, staff, and students in the College of Science and College of Education.
We invite applications at any rank in Chemistry or Physics & Astronomy; rank will be determined based on qualifications. We seek accomplished scholars who are also committed to providing a world-class education for all our students. Ideal candidates will have: 1) a doctorate in chemistry, physics, astronomy, or closely related field, OR a masters in one of these fields plus a doctorate in science education; 2) a strong record of science education research connected to classroom practice; 3) experience teaching at the undergraduate level using inclusive, evidence-based instructional practices; 4) a commitment to equity in science education; 5) experience developing or managing collaborative educational programs; and 6) excellent communication, organization, and leadership skills. Successful candidates will be well-versed in contemporary issues in DBER. We will consider candidates who are strictly DBER scholars as well as those pursuing two lines of research – one in their scientific discipline and one in science education.
Recent University of Utah investments in science and mathematics education make this an exciting time to join our collaborative enterprise. Three early-career scholars in the College of Education have nucleated a strong research core to complement existing programmatic efforts across campus. The Crocker Science Center, a new integrated science facility, has catalyzed a number of education initiatives in the College of Science, including a college-wide Learning Assistant program, an integrated science core curriculum, a STEM transfer student program, a college-wide internship program, course-based undergraduate research experiences, etc. In addition, several cohort-based math and science teacher-education programs have been developed in recent years to improve teachers’ content knowledge and their ability to deploy evidence-based inclusive pedagogies. These investments occur against the backdrop of large enrollment increases at the University of Utah, resulting in a more diverse student body from a broader range of academic, geographic, socioeconomic, ethnic, and life-experience backgrounds. Applications will be evaluated by departmental subcommittees who will forward a list of finalists to a central Executive Committee with representatives from all College of Science departments as well as the College of Education. The Executive Committee will select interviewees and make hiring recommendations to the appropriate department(s) in the College of Science.
