Postdoctoral positions are available on inner ear regeneration for hearing recovery from deafness, using reprogramming, animal models, and bioengineering approach.

The focus of the project is to regenerate diverse inner ear cell types including hair cells, neurons and other cell types in adult animal models (mouse and pig) and restore hearing from deafness. We have recently uncovered a major mechanism by which adult mammalian inner ear cell types can be induced to divide and differentiate into hair cells with high efficiency by reprogramming. The work sets a stage by which regeneration can be expanded to multiple inner ear cell types to achieve hearing restoration. We have established in vitro adult cochlea explant culture that can be used to study regeneration including screening potent compounds for regeneration. We use both mouse and large animal model (e.g. pig) and state-of-the-art approaches (reprogramming, RNA-seq, genome editing, nanoparticle delivery and physiological function study).

The positions present unique and exciting opportunities for candidate interested in using molecular, cellular, genetics and animal models to study inner ear cell regeneration and to explore the potential for functional recovery of hearing from animal models to humans. The laboratory provides an interdisciplinary and collaborative environment in all aspects of hearing research. The laboratory is part of Eaton-Peabody Laboratories, the largest hearing research center with diverse hearing research programs. The position provides an opportunity working with industry to advance the work to human application. A successful candidate (Ph.D, M.D/Ph.D or MD) should have a strong background in the relevant areas with demonstration of track record of scientific publication.
