Nanoscience Chair

University of North Carolina Greensboro

Created in 2010, the Department of Nanoscience is composed of individuals with research interests in mathematics, physics, chemistry, and biology committed to using interdisciplinary approaches to solve complex problems on the nanoscale. We seek an established scientist and scholar to lead this interdisciplinary and innovative department. Successful candidates will be recommended for appointment as Professor with tenure and will become a member of a department with state-of-the-art research and teaching facilities.

The Nanoscience Department is located at the Joint School of Nanoscience and Nanoengineering (JSNN) which is a 105,000 square foot research and teaching facility. The JSNN is administered by both UNC Greensboro and North Carolina A&T State University. It represents a unique collaboration between faculty in the pure/applied sciences and engineering. The department has an enrollment of 53 graduate students and offers a Professional MS Degree in Nanoscience and a PhD in Nanoscience. The research tools available at the JSNN include a nanoelectronics and nanobioelectronics cleanroom; nanofabrication facility with nanoparticle synthesis, characterization, mixing and scale-up facilities; characterization suite, including NMR facility, analytical facility, and microscopy lab; shared nanoscience labs, including genomics, nanobiology, BSL-3, and a nanobiophysics and nanochemistry visualization and computing facility. A complete listing of tools is available at http://jsnn.ncat.uncg.edu/facilities/equipment/.

The department's nine faculty members have a strong track record of federal (NIH, NSF, DOD) and private funding across multiple relevant disciplines. The department Chair reports to the Dean of the JSNN and has primary responsibility and accountability for the overall direction, operation, and management of the department in accordance with the mission and goals of the JSNN. Candidates must possess a terminal degree (PhD or equivalent); a distinguished and active record of extramurally sponsored research; a history of excellent peer-reviewed scholarship; demonstrated expertise and commitment to graduate teaching; and a strong track record of leadership, mentoring/sponsorship and personnel management, especially as it relates to oversight of multi-disciplinary and interdisciplinary research. The Chair will be committed to the principle that a diverse and inclusive community of students, staff, and faculty enhances our mission in providing exceptional education, advancing nanoscience discovery, and fostering innovation to help tackle the most vexing challenges in nanoscience especially as is relevant to the economic growth of nano-enabled industry in the state and nation.

Greensboro is located in the triad region of North Carolina which includes the cities of High Point and Winston Salem. It is approximately one hour to the west of the research triangle. As such it is a vibrant, academic and professional community offering excellent schools, lively arts, and an unmatched quality of life. Amenities associated with urban areas of Charlotte, NC and Raleigh, NC are all within an hour and thirty minutes driving time.

Interested candidates should submit a cover letter; curriculum vitae; statement of research/scholarly accomplishments and interests; a narrative of administrative and leadership philosophy including a statement of past and proposed efforts to enhance diversity and inclusion; and names of three individuals who will be contacted, with permission of the candidate, following initial evaluations by the search committee to https://spartantalent.uncg.edu/postings/11573

Initial evaluation will begin September 30, 2018 and will continue until the position is filled. For information, contact Dr. Dennis LaJuenesse, Chair of the Search Committee (drlajeun@uncg.edu).
