Shared Instrumentation Facility Associate Director

The Associate Director of Research Resources has the following principal duties: 1) Oversees the daily functions of the Shared Instrumentation Facility including equipment utilization, acquisition, and business matters. 2) Responsible for evaluating the research infrastructure needs of the entire campus and works with the AVP to include additional core facilities under central ORED management. 3) Responsible for creating and administrating a campus-wide collaborative research infrastructure program to allow access to equipment in individual faculty laboratories under special agreements.

Job Responsibilities:

Oversee operation of the Shared Instrumentation Facility (SIF) at LSU.  This includes overseeing all SIF instruments and staff, and interfacing with the advisory and executive committees.  The suite of instruments includes optical microscopes, electron microscopes and electron spectrometers, X-ray diffractometers and spectrometers, electron microprobes, electrical and magnetic property measurement systems, and helium recovery and recycling systems. (40%)

Responsible for evaluating the research infrastructure needs of the entire campus and works with the AVPR to include additional core facilities under central ORED management.  Oversees the entire network of campus-wide facilities. (25%)

Oversight of financial accounting and budgeting, instrument purchase, service and maintenance tasks. (15%)

Responsible for creating and administrating a campus-wide collaborative research infrastructure program allowing access to equipment in individual faculty laboratories under agreements that they will have priority for repairs and replacements. (10%)

Work with other LSU campuses to extend support and provide co-funding mechanisms for support of research infrastructure. (5%)

Assist faculty in establishing educational training and coursework for technological purposes. (5%)

Minimum Qualifications:

Master's Degree and 5 years of hands-on instrumentation experience.

Preferred Qualifications: 

Ph.D. and proposal-writing experience; instrumentation facility / laboratory manager experience; industrial outreach experience, and superior communication and interpersonal skills.
