Assistant Professor of Grain Crops

STARTING DATE: January 2019 or as negotiated

RESPONSIBILITIES: The Assistant Professor of Grain Crops is a tenure-track faculty position with 60% extension and 40% research responsibilities. Given the challenges facing grain crop farmers in the region, the successful candidate is expected to provide leadership for state-wide extension and research in developing and implementing a systems approach to sustainable grain crop production and management. The successful candidate will develop a strong extramurally-funded and nationally recognized research program in grain crops, publish in peer-reviewed scientific journals, and train graduate students. The candidate should take an integrated approach focused on developing management systems that are economically and environmentally sound and include multi-tactic approaches to advancing corn, soybean, and grain crop production. Possible research topics include the use of spatial data management approaches for optimizing grain crop profitability, development of cropping systems to improve crop resilience under abiotic and biotic stress and improvement of crop quality (e.g. protein, oil and nutrient content). The successful candidate will assume a leadership role on the statewide Field and Forage Crops Team and work in a multidisciplinary team of research scientists, extension specialists, and county-based educators. Responsibilities include developing an innovative and highly visible extension program in grain crop management in the Mid-Atlantic Region that raises profitability and sustainability of the industry. This includes overseeing the grain crop and corn silage testing programs and providing leadership in developing educational materials based on research.

QUALIFICATIONS: A Ph.D. or equivalent in agronomy, or closely related field and a desire to collaborate in multidisciplinary programs required. The successful candidate must have completed all degree requirements by the appointment date. The candidate must have strong writing and oral communication skills. An ability to engage professionally with a diverse population from industry, farmers, faculty, staff, and students from across the Commonwealth is required.
