This position is part of the Bioprocess Development (BR&D) organization. The individual in this role will:
  • Provide 24/7 process and system support to enable business continuity for production and laboratory areas. This support includes change control implementation, deviation investigation, routine process control system support activities, troubleshooting process control systems and off hours support.
  • Initiate, configure, test, and manage software and/or hardware changes to maintain or improve process control, MES and related data system solutions which enable development of large molecule processes and the production of GMP bulk API for clinical trial use.
  • Implement innovative automation solutions to enable world class bioprocess development by partnering with other engineers, development scientists and technical service leaders

Specific Functions or Duties

    The individual in this role will provide technical expertise for implementing, maintaining and troubleshooting process control solutions in the production of Bulk API for development and clinical trial purposes. The ability to multi-task efficiently will be important since several different processes run in the bioprocess pilot plant and laboratories over the course of a year and each may be in a different stage of development.

    This opportunity will include process monitoring and troubleshooting, project management, identifying and implementing improvements, documentation of new and modified software and/or hardware and authoring technical reports where appropriate.

    In addition, this role provides automation technical support for process control system platforms (DeltaV, ControlLogix) and/or process information systems (PI data historian) as well as system support activities (e.g. performance monitoring, password maintenance, cyber security, etc.). Oversight of contractors assisting in the delivery of automation solutions may be required.

    Responsibilities include documentation and testing activities to ensure that process control and related systems maintain the appropriate state of validation for use.
  • The individual in this role will be responsible for managing changes and investigating deviations/process upsets.
  • The individual is also responsible for assisting with life-cycle management for automation systems.
Regular interactions with the following groups are critical for success: HSE, Quality Assurance, Tech Services, Development, Operations, FUME/C&Q, Engineering, Maintenance, Environmental Monitoring, and Manufacturing.

Basic Qualifications
  • Bachelor of Science in Engineering or a technical field.
  • Commensurate experience with a strong background in the application and implementation of process field instrumentation in a manufacturing environment.
  • Ability to configure process control systems and troubleshoot computer hardware and instrumentation.

Additional Skills/Preferences
  • Ability to work well in a team environment incorporating a variety of functional relationships and desire to be point of accountability.
  • Demonstrated experience with DeltaV (Batch, Phase/Sequence Programming and Advanced Control Module Configuration), analog and discrete instrumentation, control devices and device networks
  • 5+ years' experience in large scale manufacturing, preferably regulated
  • Excellent troubleshooting skills with the ability to work both independently and in team-based project environments
  • Interest in supporting various computer system platforms such as DeltaV, Unicorn, PLCs, data historians and PAT systems.
  • Familiarity with MES and data system architectures, operating systems, applications and interfaces
  • Ability to organize, prioritize, schedule, complete and follow-up on work activities to meet customers' needs
  • Experience with pilot plant unit operations such as fermentation, bioreactors, centrifugation and filtration
