Florida Atlantic University (FAU) is seeking a dynamic leader and highly accomplished scientist to serve as the Executive Director for a new Health and Aging research institute – IHEALTH.

 

The Institute will be a matrix research institute, working closely with the FAU Schmidt College of Medicine, Schmidt College of Science, Lynn College of Nursing and other colleges at FAU. IHEALTH will drive a growing emphasis on patient centered research that harnesses the power of genomics and clinical data to drive “precision health”. This transformative approach to health promotion and disease prevention requires collaboration across many disciplines, ranging from “big data” and bioinformatics, to discovery science and disease causation, to engineering and real-time health monitors, to lifestyle choices and behavioral interventions, to clinical implementation and quality improvements.

 

As the Executive Director for FAU IHEALTH, this individual will lead this interdisciplinary program and hold a tenured faculty position.

 

This outstanding researcher will be provided with significant resources to further develop the research institutes mission at FAU. The Executive Director will report to the Vice President for Research and work closely with the Provost, and relevant Deans, Chairs, Center Directors as well as faculty to develop the mission, vision and strategic plan for new and rapidly expanding health-related research activities at FAU.

 

The Executive Director will engage these key stakeholders to determine the needs relative to biomedical research growth and will assist in the effective integration of objectives and resources to advance research on Health and Aging at the University. Work to advance the University's investment in biomedical research by helping to bring together current research programs, grow these programs, as well as to develop new research initiatives.

 

Identify and pursue opportunities for research collaboration and educational relationships with regional, national and international partners including, but not limited to the Scripps Research Institute Florida, Max Planck Florida Institute for Neuroscience, regional hospital partners, and the Florida Atlantic University Research and Development Authority (FAU Research Park). Will be provided with resources and responsibility for the recruitment of a number of new faculty positions relevant to the growth of FAU neuroscience efforts.

 

Provide leadership in the development and implementation of strategies to promote excellence in research on aging; work with academic units and partners to direct the development of a trans-college, trans-campus integrated IHEALTH. Increase the program's research stature and funding; develop the infrastructure needed to establish a robust, high quality, funded and compliant research program, and build alliances between faculty for submission of interdisciplinary and translational research proposals.

 

Oversee pilot project funding program, aligned core facilities, Seminar series, and community engagement activities.

 

Work collaboratively with the Colleges in the recruitment and selection of key faculty and research positions.

 

Work closely with the FAU Office for Advancement to play a central role in the coordination and implementation of strategies relevant to major gifts and donor engagement to support growth of the IHEALTH.

 

Work closely with the Vice President for Research to support effective regulatory compliance, resource allocation, technology transfer and other issues relevant to the IHEALTH. Serve on the FAU Research Council, as requested, to provide assistance on assessment of policy, resource and procedural improvements at FAU.

 

Serve as the public liaison to internal and external constituents and, support the development of outreach activities related to the IHEALTH.

 

Support strategic expansion of biomedical research at FAU.

 

Qualifications:

A doctoral degree (PhD or MD/PhD) from an accredited institution in the physical, biomedical, or related sciences required.

 

Sustained contribution to the sciences evidenced in sustained productivity in funded research and publications for a minimum of ten (10) years required.

 

Sustained experience as principal investigator on externally funded aging-related research projects for a minimum of ten (10) years.

 

A record of distinguished research, publications, scholarly activities including teaching and mentoring, as well as academic service, appropriate to qualify the candidate for appointment as a tenured full professor according to the degreed department's criteria at FAU, including an actively funded research program required.

 

A record of research leadership and administrative experience in higher education that includes mentoring and faculty development, budgeting, assessment, and demonstrated achievement in research project and program development required.

 

Unquestioned integrity and the highest ethical standards required.

 

Preferred skills:

Advanced knowledge of the current state of biomedical research, as well as experience and engagement in current trends in the biomedical sciences.

 

Exemplary interpersonal and communication skills to work effectively within and outside the College and University.

 

An understanding of challenges and key issues that confront academic objectives in research as well as undergraduate, graduate and post-doctoral education.

 

A strategic vision on how to lead and propel the FAU IHEALTH to local, state, national and international prominence in research, along with demonstrated experience in the use of innovative and entrepreneurial approaches.

 

Management skills that include collegiality and respect along with excellence in problem solving, an ability to establish effective partnerships in an academic environment, and the capacity to advance strategic initiatives and achieve targeted goals.
