Postdoc in Developing High-throughput Metabolomics Methods for Population-based Phenotyping
Seeking qualified applicants for a Postdoctoral Researcher in Developing High-throughput Metabolomics Methods for Population-based Phenotyping at the Gunma University Initiative for Advanced Research (GIAR) in collaboration with the Karolinska Institute (KI)
Mass spectrometry-based metabolomics has become an integral method for understanding health and disease. However, the method is generally slow due to the need for incorporating chromatographic analysis. There is a need to develop rapid high-throughput mass spectrometry-based metabolomics for applications in large-scale molecular phenotyping studies. The aim of this project is to develop and employ methods for rapid mass spectrometry-based molecular phenotyping at the population level. The successful applicant will be part of a team applying high-resolution mass spectrometry (HRMS)-based metabolomics to perform deep molecular phenotyping. The acquired phenotype profiles will be integrated with patient meta-data to identify relationships between metabolic trajectories and sub-phenotypes of respiratory disease. These efforts will require significant experience in mass spectrometry as well as sample preparation. A primary task of the project will involve developing novel sample preparation strategies suitable for direct injection-based metabolomics. The project will be conducted in close collaboration with Agilent Technologies. The successful applicant will be involved in a dedicated team of researchers focused on determining a quantitative definition of health and the associated deviations due to respiratory disease or environmental stress.
The Karolinska Institute (KI) has established a Molecular Phenotyping group at the Gunma University Institute for Advanced Research (GIAR). The current post-doctoral position is being recruited to work in this group under the supervision of Associate Prof. Craig Wheelock from KI. Daily supervision will be provided by Assistant Prof. Romanas Chaleckis at GIAR. For the purposes of this project, the laboratory has purchased an Agilent RapidFire 365 high-throughput system, an Agilent Bravo automated liquid handling platform, and an Extrahera™ automation system for Supported Liquid Extraction (SLE) and Solid Phase Extraction (SPE). The successful candidate will have access to state-of-the art instrumentation including 3 QToFs, 1 triple quadrupole, and 1 GC-MS, as well renovated laboratory facilities. The official language of the lab is English, and most affiliated researchers and administrative support staff speak English. Term of Employment
Type of contract: Fixed-term employee
Contract Period: The period of employment will be from the agreed upon start date until March 31, 2019. The contract period can then be renewed until March 31, 2020.
We are looking for highly motivated candidates with a Ph.D. in mass spectrometry or bioanalytical chemistry and experience in small molecule mass spectrometry as well as biological sample preparation techniques. Candidates should have demonstrated experience in mass spectrometry. We are especially interested in candidates with prior experience working with method development and sample preparation. It is expected that a significant portion of time will be spent on developing novel sample preparation procedures for high-throughput metabolomics. Excellent communication skills and an ability to interact with other staff in the lab and with collaborators in various networks are essential.
