Merck’s Pharmacokinetics, Pharmacodynamics, and Drug Metabolism (PPDM) Department has an opening in West Point for an exceptional scientist experienced in mass spectrometry - based metabolomics and small molecule discovery bioanalytics.


As a Senior Scientist, you will work collaboratively with cross - functional teams of scientists from both PPDM and Discovery Research. Your responsibilities will involve developing assays to measure small molecule therapeutics, endogenous small molecule biomarkers, and metabolomic / lipidomic profiling to support pre - clinical studies for our discovery teams. This role provides a unique opportunity for developing innovative bio - analytical approaches in support of Merck's pipeline dedicated to developing novel therapeutic agents. 


Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Developing novel sample preparation and analytical approaches for endogenous small molecules and metabolomic profiling analysis
  • Developing assays and testing samples; pharmacokinetic (PK), pharmacodynamics (PD), and endogenous metabolomic biomarkers, using a variety of preclinical models and challenging matrices e.g. plasma, serum, CSF, cell lysates and tissue homogenates
  • Applying scientific training and acumen to troubleshoot and identify appropriate bioanalytical solutions for measuring complex and challenging endogenous small molecules as well as therapeutics
  • Delivering high quality quantitative data to project teams for PK and PK / PD analysis
  • Contribute to establishing and maintaining bioanalytical lab operations 

To accomplish the above, the successful candidate must have excellent interpersonal, collaborative, and communication skills in order to contribute across our multidisciplinary team environment.

Qualifications

Education Minimum Requirement:

  • A Ph.D. in Biology, Biochemistry, Pharmaceutical Sciences, Chemistry or related area, or an M.S. with 4+ years, or a B.S. with 7+ years of relevant experience

Required Experience and Skills:

  • Expertise with quantitative data analysis and LC - MS based approaches to small molecule and metabolomic analysis 
  • Targeted analyte quantification via multiple / parallel reaction monitoring methods
  • Experience using LC - MS - compatible sample preparation methods 
  • Must be an independent scientist with an ability to excel in a team environment
  • Keen attention to detail, excellent communication skills, highly organized 
  • Excellent multi - tasking skills, adaptability, and ability to maintain composure while managing multiple concurrent projects across therapeutic areas 
  • Ability to listen intently in order to understand, process, and apply new information aimed at testing and identifying appropriate assay specific bioanalytical solutions

Preferred Experience and Skills:

  • An extablished track record demonstrated through high quality publications in the fields of Bioanalysis or Metabolomics
  • Understanding of metabolic pathways and foundational knowledge of biology is a plus
  • Experience with a variety of instrument platforms and data analysis tools
  • Experience interfacing with and presenting at project team meetings
