Status:   Temporary Full-Time

Site:   Health Sciences North, Ramsey Lake Health Centre

Purpose:   The successful incumbent will conduct scientific research related to the exploration and development of identifying peripheral blood markers that will serve as quantifiable predictive tools for assessing an older adult colon cancer patients' ability to tolerate specific treatment options and the probability of disease recurrence. This individual will work closely with Dr. Janet McElhaney, an expert in the field of geriatrics and immunosenescence, to help develop an increasingly important and emerging program for the benefit of older adults in Northern Ontario. It is expected that this scientist will have superior scientific knowledge in human immunology; evaluation and analytical skills; writing research reports and scientific publications.

Education and Training:

  • PhD in a biological or a related field, with at least (2) two years of experience in immunology and molecular biology
  • The candidate must be a graduate of a post-secondary degree program and have graduated within the last three years from an accredited college or university
  • The position is to be the candidate’s first full-time employment as a Post-Doctoral Research Fellow
  • Solid background in molecular and cellular biology techniques including cell culture, flow cytometry, and RNA sequencing


  • Experience in managing multiple projects and meeting competing deadlines

Knowledge, Skills, Ability:

  • Track record of first author publications and experience in statistical analyses
  • Technical expertise in cell biology, immunology, and molecular biology methodologies; including peripheral blood mononuclear cell isolations, establishing cell lines from patient samples, confocal microscopy, flow cytometry, and RNA sequencing analyses
  • Knowledge of the pathological mechanisms of colon cancers, particularly immune cell infiltration is beneficial
  • Acquired skills in experimental design, the development of standard operating procedures, and general quality assurance
  • Good team player and networking skills
  • Autonomous, self-motivated, rigorous, and innovative
  • Excellent interpersonal skills, oral and written communication skills

Personal Suitability:

  • Candidates must be legally entitled to work in Canada
  • Demonstrated positive work record and good attendance record

Shift:  Days; some weekend and evening work as required

French Language Service Designation:   Bilingualism is an Asset

Salary:   Commensurate with experience.
