Postdoctor position in diatom/microalgae biotechnology
A postdoctor position is available at the Department of Biology. The appointment has a duration of 2 years. The position is funded through the HAVBRUK project “Downsizing light harvesting antennae to scale up production potential and valorization from cultivation of marine microalgae”, and is financed by the Norwegian Research Council.
The aim of the project is to generate marine microalgae strains suitable for industrial production of commercially valuable products, by creating algal strains with increased solar-to-biomass energy conversion efficiency of photosynthesis in high-density mass cultures. We will use the model diatom Phaeodactylum tricornutum to create strains with a Truncated (smaller) Light-harvesting Antenna (TLA strains), a property that will lead to improved rates of growth and biomass productivity. To achieve this goal, we will apply targeted genome editing (CRISPR/Cas9 technology) to disrupt genes encoding proteins suspected to be crucial for the incorporation and assembly of the light-harvesting antenna complexes. Putative TLA strains will be subjected to physiological and biochemical analyses to test and validate their superior photosynthetic performance and productivity.
The applicant must have a PhD (or equivalent) in photobiology, biophysics, cell/molecular biology/biotechnology or biochemistry. Documented experience with microalgae, especially related to photobiology, will be considered an advantage. Molecular genetics and some bioinformatics skills are advantageous.
Candidates should have at least one first author publication in a peer-reviewed journal.
Successful candidate should be dedicated and creative, with a strong ability to work problem-oriented. The applicant must have good social skills, a proactive attitude, ability to co-operate and interact as well as to work independently.

The position requires spoken and written fluency in the English language. Applicants from non-English-speaking countries outside Europe must document English skills by an approved test. Terms of employment
The appointment of a Postdoc will be made according to Norwegian guidelines for universities and university colleges and to the general regulations regarding university employees. The position is remunerated according to the Norwegian State salary scale.There is a 2% deduction for superannuation contribution.
