The Learning Design & Development Specialist reports to the Learning Design & Development Lead and is part of the Learning Support Services (LSS) Learning Design & Development group. Success in this role depends on the following efforts:

Collaborate with program, product, and project managers to gather requirements and integrate business objectives and technical constraints with divisional learning needs.

Collaborate with Global Learning and Development team members, targeted learners, and other instructional designers to define the customer experience using the appropriate user centered design techniques and methods.

Determine and recommend the appropriate user-centered design methods, tools, deliverables, and milestones in order to design optimal solutions considering tablet, mobile, and desktop. Some of the methods include the development of bite sized learning, social learning, case scenarios, videos, eLearning and virtual learning.

Ensure that solutions follow internal standards as well as industry best practices.

Manage the creation of learning solutions in accordance to Merck’s annual learning plan and in response to critical ad-hoc requests, following the Learning Shared Services strategy and model.


Education Minimum Requirement: 

  • Required: Bachelor’s degree 
  • Preferred: Degree or certification in instructional design, education, training, media designer or related field of study
Required Experience and Skills: 

  • Minimum 4 years of related experience, with minimum 2 years of experience designing and developing learning solutions (e.g., e-learning, instructor led courses, documents, exams, etc.);
  • Experience managing multiple learning solution projects and/or programs at once.
Preferred Experience and Skills:

  • We are seeking individual(s) with experience working within innovative teams to collaborate among team members, Subject Matter Experts, and business partners to solve business problems and to prototype solutions driving future performance.
  • Candidate must have demonstrated abilities as design thinker and problem solving, with excellent communication skills and strong analytical capabilities.
  • Knowledge and/or experience using technology to enhance the learner experience.
  • Knowledge of adult learning principles, facilitation, and learner-centered activities;
  • Experience developing blended learning solutions for different learning modalities (e.g., e-learning, classroom training, virtual training, etc.);
  • Knowledge of mobile learning requirements; knowledge of social learning concepts and application; knowledge of e-learning standards and Learning Management System courseware integration with AICC and SCORM; knowledge of emerging and progressive content development tools and techniques;
  • Familiarity with content authoring tools / development technologies (e.g., Articulate, Adobe Captivate, Lectora, HTML 5, etc.);
  • Knowledge or experience in creating reusable content / learning assets).
