Under the general supervision of the Strategic Business Intelligence & Analytics Head, this Director-level individual is responsible for providing Business Intelligence leadership rooted in a deep understanding of the external healthcare environment and Merck’s internal business. The individual partners with key stakeholders to develop insights and recommendations that will help enhance global and regional strategies and decision-making through improved visibility

into how well our choices fit in the context of competitive and evolving marketplace. Provide business intelligence (BI) and competitive intelligence (CI) across Therapeutic Areas, geographies and capabilities, including unbiased and fact based competitive insights, benchmarking and recommendations regarding commercial strategies, portfolio prioritization and resource allocation. Proactively facilitates the identification and prioritization of intelligence efforts critical to strategic planning and execution for key stakeholders, and provides direction for the design and refinement of intelligence plans. Proactively identifies and effectively communicates commercial opportunities based on intelligence and insights.

Primary activities include, but are not limited to:

  • Lead analysis and perform assessments of select competitor activities across various commercial capabilities and strategies including (but not limited to) digitalization, price value affordability, customer/patient engagement, commercial innovation, and Merck’s Center for Observational and Real-World Evidence (CORE) with articulation of implications to Merck. Lead communication efforts of findings and make recommendations to key stakeholder groups.
  • Globally monitor and benchmark strategic plans and key developments of Merck competitors to provide early warning for potential threats and opportunities for successful implementation to prioritized strategic initiatives and tactical plans in the areas of digital/technology, market access, pricing and policy. 
  • Maintain comprehensive and current understanding of relevant healthcare environment issues broadly and in select top markets including: policy, regulatory, health technology and pricing/drug utilization initiatives to identify key issues relevant to strategic planning initiatives at the market level.
  • Propose, lead, design and conduct CI/BI research and analyses, including multi-disciplinary work-shops and scenario plans, with the aim of shaping portfolio strategies. Lead Competitive Scenario Exercises in collaboration with stakeholders. Ensure the effective implementation and integrity of all CI and BI activities such as primary research, and other intelligence gathering and analysis projects through timely and appropriate coordination with stakeholders and external vendors.
  • Demonstrate leadership in developing and connecting a global network of subject matter experts across divisions to share intelligence and to support strategic activities of key stakeholders
  • Work closely with colleagues across Global Human Health and Merck Manufacturing Division to provide maximum benefit to stakeholders.
  • Rigorously apply the Merck standard of ethics and policy for intelligence gathering. Proactively communicates and facilitates discussions with all key stakeholders and technical personnel to ensure that these ethical and legal standards are well integrated into all activities.



Minimum Requirement: B.A./B.S.

Required Experience and Skills**:

  • At least 7 years of relevant biopharmaceutical industry experience 
  • Proven record of innovative and critical thinking, and excellent problem-solving ability
  • Practical knowledge and experience in the applications of scientific and business intelligence resources to address key intelligence questions 
  • Excellent project leadership skills 
  • Excellent oral, written and interpersonal communication skills
Preferred Experience and Skills:
  • MBA or other advanced degree (Ph.D., Pharm. D., M.D.)
  • Deep knowledge of biopharmaceutical CI/BI/MI resources, systems, and data analytics
  • Extensive network in GHH
  • Demonstrated leadership and abilities to influence key decision makers to adopt his/her recommendations
