Deputy Director of Nanoscopy Center in SLST, ShanghaiTech University
ShanghaiTech University is leading an international effort to combine advanced dynamic 3D super-resolution optical imaging of living cells with 3D soft X-ray microscopy using our free-electron laser and advanced 3D STED and SMS microscopes designed and built in collaboration with the Dept. of Cell Biology at Yale University, led by Professor James E. Rothman, Nobel Laureate in Physiology or Medicine. The Nanoscopy Center in the School of Life Science and Technology at ShanghaiTech will drive biological research with this breakthrough technology.
The Deputy Director, Nanoscopy Center will hold a tenure-track faculty position in the School of Life Science and Technology, initially as Assistant or Associate Professor depending on seniority and achievements, will work closely with Prof. Rothman to provide day-to-day leadership of specific cell biology collaborations with faculty at ShanghaiTech and at Yale. He/she will conduct independent, thematically relevant research in the Nanoscopy Center supported by a generous start-up package. A faculty appointment at Yale is anticipated to facilitate collaborations with Profs. Joerg Bewersdorf, Derek Toomre and others and will involve reciprocal visits including students and staff. Dedicated Nanoscopy Center staff will be assigned to support collaborations.
A strong track record in fundamental cell biology is required, emphasizing dynamics of subcellular compartments, quantitative analysis, and advanced super-resolution imaging, ideally combined with optogenetic control and gene editing. Substantial experience in optics will be needed to adapt home-built imaging systems to novel applications. A Ph.D. degree and at least 4 years of leadership experience as an independent investigator at the junior faculty level are required, along with at least 5 years of cell biological research with advanced microscopy (can include postdoctoral but not PhD thesis research). We especially encourage candidates who have trained abroad in the USA or Europe in well-recognized laboratories. Current faculty in leading universities in China and abroad are encouraged to apply.
