Position Overview - Basic Functions & Responsibility
Essential function(s) includes, but is not limited to:
This individual is a functional area expert who supports business decisions across Merck divisions in the areas of New Product Development and Business Development and Licensing. Through partnering with GHH CBL leaders this individual leads the creation and validation of long term commercial revenue and expense forecasts that are critical inputs needed for investment decisions which impact all Merck divsions.
This work requires broad and deep understanding of the commercial pharmaceutical market, advanced technical skills to model and integrate often complex internal and external data, as well as management skills to work constructively with other functional experts across the organization. Projects are often global, with more detailed breakouts by regions and top ten markets which requires a good understanding of the international pharmaceutical marketplace. As many projects are highly business sensitive, maintaining a high level of confidentiality is essential.
Basic responsibilities of this role are as follows:
Business and Functional Expertise: A thorough understanding of most commercial and scientific therapeutic disease areas across Merck’s Customer Business Lines (CBLs). Serves as a key resource for project teams to help define suitable milestones and achieve objectives.
Business Acumen: Good business judgment – particularly in translating complex information into well supported conclusions and recommendations.
Forecasting / Analytical Methods: An in-depth understanding of forecasting and advanced analytical methods to inform unique and complex investment decisions.
GHH and Cross Divisional Collaboration: Close collaboration with CBL New Products and Business Development project teams. Leading and/or actively participating in cross-divisional projects is required, particularly across GHH, MRL and corporate functions.
Primary activities include, but are not limited to:
  • Leads cross divisional teams in identifying milestones and achieving objectives. Leads team to complete target product profiles.
  • Coaches and advises commercial assessment team and project team members as a functional and knowledge expert.
  • Solves business problems by building decision support models that incorporate complex data sources & assumptions.
  • Evaluates and integrates functional expert advise both internal and external to Merck into assessments.
  • Generates reliable long term forecast & expense projections and refines the key assumptions with stakehoders.
  • Presents and defends assessments up through senior management across GHH, MRL and Corporate.
  • Project Management – leads large cross functional project teams with limited formal authority and helps deliver on team objectives.
  • Business Expertise – identifies, synthesizes and incorporates complex information from different sources into well supported commercial projections & recommendations. Participates in development of project strategies.
  • Influence – challenges data or inputs that are inconsistent with expectations and prior experience and proposes specific alternatives.
  • Technical/Analytics - interprets complex pharmaceutical & therapeutic information and integrates into quantitative models in part by leveraging advanced analytical tools.
  • Collaboration - works in diverse teams and across divisions. Independently leads cross functional teams in creating detailed product profiles.
  • Communication – clearly presents (verbal and written) analytical outputs and supports recommendations to management audiences. Effectively secures both understanding and consensus.

Required Experience:
  • Bachelors’ degree.
  • Minimum of 7 years of relevant Pharmaceutical Industry commercial experience (e.g. sales, marketing, market research, access…)
  • Experienced in integrating complex therapeutic and commercial data to create reliable forecast projections.
  • Strong business expertise with a good understanding of standard financial valuation techniques and outputs used for management decision making.
  • Good understanding of the global market access environment (particularly in Merck’s core operating territories).
  • An in-depth understanding of market research methodologies (ideally with direct experience).
  • Demonstrated leadership and a successful track record of managing complex projects.
Preferred Experience:
  • Advanced degree (MBA, PhD).
  • Experience in Business Development or Licensing.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage ambiguity and to adapt to the changing needs of customers and the business.
  • 0-5% Travel
