Reporting to Executive Director, Corporate Alliance Management, responsibilities span 3 primary areas with potential for different portfolio mix based on the needs of Department:  1. Operational support for global high complexity alliances (Tier 1)2. Manage portfolio of regional or global medium complexity alliances (Tier 2 or 3) 3. Business process development and continuous improvement
Alliance Management Responsibilities:The Associate Director will support the Executive Director on the below responsibilities for Tier 1 alliances and be accountable for the below responsibilities on Tier 2/3 alliances. Specific duties will vary according to the scope and lifecycle stage of the assigned portfolio, but will typically include:  
  • Plan and execute a comprehensive alliance launch plan for new alliances.   
  • Identify and align key stakeholders across internal and partner functions to ensure engagement and advocacy that supports the goals of the alliance.   
  • Establish and  manage the alliance governance process, where appropriate, consistent with agreement intent, and ensure that joint committees function efficiently with timely decision-making, taking into account necessary linkages to Merck senior management/internal governance mechanisms.
  • Provide a mechanism for reporting status of the alliance and identify areas of opportunity with the business areas.
  • Provide an open and continuous channel of communication to ensure appropriate visibility of the alliance across both companies. 
  • Participate in internal business meetings where appropriate to keep a finger on the pulse of the business and the alliance in order to identify and communicate value drivers.
  • Ensure that contractual responsibilities and obligations are clearly understood and met by both partners, including working with Finance, Business Partners, Investor Relations, Public Affairs and alliance partners to appropriately manage financial obligations (FTE, milestone, royalty, etc.), information sharing and public disclosures.  Clarify responsibilities and obligations, where and when necessary, either through governance mechanism or contract amendments.  
  • Manage and optimize the relationship between alliance partners to ensure a productive working environment. Proactively identify and resolve conflicts, and when appropriate, escalate conflicts/disputes to appropriate management or committees, consistent with the Agreement.
  • Support evolution of alliances through the life cycle, including negotiation /drafting of contractual amendments and management of any necessary agreement terminations. Work with Corporate Business Development to address business risks that require clarification or revisions to the existing contract.

Alliance Process Excellence Responsibilities:  
  • Responsible for development, maintenance & enhancements of Alliance systems and continual improvement initiatives in support of the alliance management processes; e.g. Work Front, Alliance Management Team space, Alliance Management Playbook, Alliance Report Card, LKR 2.0, etc. 
  • Interface with IT to identify means of improving alliance capability across the enterprise.
  • Scan & engage with external environment to develop training programs to enhance alliance capability in the enterprise. Manage the Department’s alliance reporting process to provide analytics & visibility to identify opportunities and risks within alliances.
  • Provide operational & tactical support to the senior alliance leaders as needed.
  Qualifications

Education Minimum Requirement:   Bachelor’s degree 
Required Experience and Skills:
  • 5-7 years of experience in the biotech/pharmaceutical industry; with a minimum of 2 years in any of the following:   Alliance Management, Project Management, Procurement, Business Development, or an external customer facing role.
  • Strong business, commercial, development and financial acumen
  • Superior collaborative skills, with an ability to work across cultural, geographic, and hierarchical boundaries
  • Analytical skills with an ability to synthesize data/insights into actionable business recommendations.
  • Excellent verbal & written communication skills. 
  • Proven team building skills in effectively managing diverse teams. 
  • Demonstrated leadership in business process development and continuous improvement. 

Preferred Experience and Skills:
  • Experience as an alliance manager, project manager or equivalent relationship management role for a development and/or commercial stage alliance.
  • Experience in reading and interpreting contracts. 
  • Six sigma experience and/or credentials.
  • Broad functional experience/exposure in previous roles. 
  • CAAM/CSAP certification or desire to achieve
  • Fluency in Spotfire, Microsoft Project, SharePoint or similar type IT tools.
  • Strong change management skills
