Senior Lecturer in Cell Biology and Genetics

The Biological Sciences Collegiate Division at the University of Chicago invites applications for a full-time position as Senior Lecturer beginning in Fall of  2018, with an initial term of three year, renewable. The position comes with a competitive salary and a competitive benefits package, including support for tuition for dependents.

The Biological Sciences Collegiate Division (BSCD) is the home to the undergraduate biological sciences curriculum at the University of Chicago.  The BSCD offers a variety of biology courses for all College students. These include courses for students majoring in biological sciences or neuroscience, as well as the courses for non-majors working to fulfill their general education requirements and courses for non-majors who wish to study some aspect of biology in greater detail.

The Senior Lecturer will be responsible for teaching courses, some designed for majors and some for non-majors, in the areas of cell biology and genetics.  Most courses include both lecture and lab components, and some are taught in partnership with University faculty.  The Senior lecturer must therefore be able to teach a course independently and to function well as a member of a teaching team.  The Senior Lecturer will also be responsible for hiring, training and supervising technicians and teaching assistants. The Senior Lecturer will also devote up to 5% of his/her time to coordinating community outreach efforts to K-12 institutions.

Applicants must have Ph.D. in the biological sciences and experience teaching university level biology lecture and laboratory courses.  Preference will be given to candidates who have demonstrated ability to teach genetics, cell biology and laboratory courses.

To apply for this position, you must submit your application through the University of Chicago’s Academic Career Opportunities website at https://academiccareers.uchicago.edu/ , select requisition # 03707, and upload 1)  a cover letter, 2)  a curriculum vitae, 3)  a sample course syllabus, 4)  course evaluations or evidence of past teaching performance,  and 5)  a statement about how you approach the teaching of biology.  In addition to the five items that you need to upload into Academic Careers, you will need to provide name and contact information for three references.  The ACO system will email your references requesting a letter of recommendation and provide instructions to the recommender on how to upload their letter into your application.

Review of applications will begin on May 15th, 2018.  Only applications that are complete,  with all required materials and recommendation letters,  will be considered.  Review of complete applications will continue until the position is filled.
