The division is comprised of sales and marketing professionals who are passionate about their role in bringing Merck's prescription medicines, vaccines, and other medical products to our customers worldwide. The Associate Director, Private Drug Plans, is the regional expert on private payer needs, private reimbursement processes and interplay with provincial drug plans, as well as being responsible for developing and maintaining stakeholder relations with regional customers including: carriers, benefit consultants/advisors, brokers and plan sponsors. The Associate Director must be based in Ontario; specific portfolio to be finalized.  The Associate Director of Private Drug Plans is field-based. In addition to developing and maintaining relationships with external stakeholders, the Associate Director Private Drug Plans works closely with internal stakeholders (Private Drug Plan team, Patient Access Team (Access Planning, Strategic Pricing, HEOR), Medical & Scientific Liaisons (MSLs), and the brand planning team) to facilitate product reimbursement submissions, reviews, reimbursement decisions and negotiations.    
  • Lead/support the development and implementation of regional strategies and tactics to obtain, maintain and improve private drug plan reimbursement for Merck products in the assigned region.
 

  • Develop and maintain expertise on private payer decision-making processes related to pharmaceuticals.
 

  • Establish and maintain contact with key private drug plan stakeholders (carriers, benefit consultants/advisors, brokers and plan sponsors).
 

  • Translate regional private payer needs, requirements and policy developments into meaningful guidance and strategic insights which are used to drive integrated brand/access planning and the development of strategy and tactics.
 

  • Evaluate the impact of regional private drug plan reimbursement and policy trends and initiatives on Merck products with respect to patient access, reimbursement and business overall.
 

  • Liaise with provincial industry associations and represent Merck perspective on topics relevant to the biopharmaceutical industry and access to Merck medications as appropriate.
 

  • Develop business to business partnerships with regional private payer stakeholders (insurers, benefit consultants, brokers, PBM's and/or plan sponsors) to identify win-win opportunities that bring mutual value. 
 

  • Identify customers and complete stakeholder mapping to understand influence cascade. 
 

  • Identifies customer centricity opportunities and creates the customer value proposition and positioning considering Merck, the customer as well as competitive factors. Leads the process of implementing a clear and winnable strategy based on performance indicators that reflect mutual goals.
Qualifications

  • University degree in policy, healthcare management, pharmacy, business or sciences
  • High level of understanding of the insurer market and business model.  
  • Negotiation skills, ability to form business to business partnerships
  • Minimum of 3-5 years of experience  in the insurance industry, pharmaceutical benefit management industry or benefit consultant industry
  • Robust understanding of payers (public, private, hospitals) and their decision-making systems
  • High level of understanding of the private insurer market, stakeholders and business model.
  • Thorough understanding of the Canadian health care system, drug reimbursement environment and key stakeholders in Canada 
  • Ability to multi-task – demonstrated ability to be responsive to simultaneous demands from internal and external customers
  • Ability to build credible relationships with broad range of stakeholders
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Strong negotiating, problem solving and decision-making skills 
  • Excellent collaborator Strong understanding and ability to apply economic and industry data to make business decisions that drive results
  • Ability to provide innovative solutions to complex problems and challenge the status quo.
  • Command of MS Office
  • Some travel required
