Global Project and Alliance Management (GPAM) sits in the R&D organization at Merck (Merck Research Laboratories, or MRL). The Project Managers and Alliance Managers in GPAM are core members of discovery, development, and alliance teams at Merck. Project Managers drive these cross-functional teams to deliver projects and products that improve human health and Merck’s business, and Alliance Managers ensure successful collaborations with our R&D alliance partners. The GPAM Project Management Office (PMO) is responsible for the development, sustainment, and training of GPAM-owned systems, tools, and business processes as well as alignment with Finance, IT, and functional area operations groups within Merck. Under the broad guidance of the Director, Project Management Office and Business Operations, Global Project and Alliance Management (GPAM), the core responsibilities for this position include:

Process Improvement / PM Operational Support 50-80%:
-Independently manage, innovate, and continually improve project management, project planning and scheduling across the portfolio of development programs-Train and support GPAM and GPAM partners on the use of planning processes, tools, and project & pipeline views-Consolidate and interpret project planning and scheduling across the project portfolio to ensure project data are accurately reported in databases and understood by development team members, including information used to derive costs, schedule, resources, and any other data pertinent to the creation and management of project plans-Establish a strong relationship with Merck’s operational partners and Information Technology team to ensure the successful delivery of new and enhanced capabilities-Collaborate with functional and regional partners to continuously update and clarify the Drug Development Work Breakdown structure-Execute on the long-term systems and capability strategy for GPAM and the cross-functional Enterprise Planning Platform (EPP) across 20+ multidivisional stakeholders-Monitor EPP team/subteam dynamics regularly to ensure optimal team performance-Improve MRL planning capabilities and improve the alignment of planning information across Merck

Project Managing Drug Development Projects 20% (Business need dependent):
-Manage development programs and / or due diligence/business development activities, regardless of complexity, phase or program type, based on direct experience  and / or the ability to translate prior experiences to a new challenge, including those which require extensive experience with drug / vaccine / biologics development, the Merck organization, and Merck processes and procedures-Manage and / or administer strategic management or governance committees
Qualifications

Education, Experience, and Skill Requirements
- Required: Bachelor's degree- Preferred: Degree concentration in a scientific-related discipline- Four (4) years of experience in PM or related role/expertise in pharma and/or biotech- Expertise in Microsoft Project

Preferred Qualifications- Strong customer orientation- PMP certification - Expertise with MS Excel- Advanced data analysis skills- Sufficient skill level and technical understanding of planning (interactive sessions, work breakdown structures) and scheduling (critical path, critical chain, budgeting, monitoring, controlling)- Experience with the planning and execution of strategies for drug / vaccine product registration and commercialization /life-cycle management (can be R&D, manufacturing or commercial perspective) with demonstrated ability to translate knowledge and expertise to other development teams and areas.- Demonstrated ability to manage scope, budget, time, resources and risk effectively for strategic projects; is business savvy and results oriented.- Demonstrated situational leadership and creative problem solving within organizations and teams- Effective interpersonal skills; able to establish good working relationships and collaborate with networks of employees of all levels; able to foster cooperation in others; creative problem-solver- Able to understand details, but keep overall “big picture” view of projects and strategies- Excellent communicator - Knows when and how to speak up to raise issues appropriately to the team and management- Keeps team members, staff group, departmental colleagues (as appropriate) and management fully apprised of project / initiative / systems status and issues
