Merck & Co., Inc. Kenilworth, N.J., U.S.A. known as Merck in the United States and Canada, is a global health care leader with a diversified portfolio of prescription medicines, vaccines and animal health products. The difference between potential and achievement lies in the spark that fuels innovation and inventiveness; this is the space where Merck has codified its legacy for over a century. Merck’s success is backed by ethical integrity, forward momentum, and an inspiring mission to achieve new milestones in global healthcare.

Merck Manufacturing Division, MMD, is a team of dedicated, energetic individuals who are committed to being the most trusted supplier of pharmaceuticals and health products worldwide. Our facilities, along with our external contractors, suppliers, and partners, comprise an interdependent global manufacturing network that’s committed to delivering a compliant, reliable supply to customers and patients on time, every time, across the globe.

The Center for Packaging & Device Analytics (CPDA) is being formed within the Merck Manufacturing Division to take responsibility for physical analytical roles that are critical for packaging production support and commercialization of new product packaging and combo-product devices. The CPDA will initially be a team of four experienced scientists/engineers (located at our West Point, PA facility), who will administer our internal Merck packaging technology laboratories, perform non-compendial physical measurements to qualify new components, design and execute testing to verify device design/functionality, and, conduct forensic investigation of packaging defects and complaints for manufacturing investigations. The group will also have important consulting responsibilities, including participating on risk assessments for new component technology, packaging control strategy, packaging line qualification & quality risk management, authoring new filing sections (packaging specs and methods), improving incoming/in-process/on-line physical testing at packaging sites, and, serving as the company experts on primary packaging barrier modeling (e.g. moisture/O2) and measurement techniques.

The CPDA is considered a Center of Excellence, residing within the central analytical group of the Merck Manufacturing Division and supporting the entire global human-health product portfolio. The CPDA will closely collaborate with various Packaging Technology engineering groups, global packaging sites, a supplier management group, and two analytical groups, one focused on extractables & leachables and the other focused on general physical measurements for products

The Senior Investigator is an individual contributor with primary responsibility for physical analytical consulting and hands-on support of solid-dosage (non-sterile) pharmaceutical primary packaging— both manufacturing support of packaging sites and new product packaging development team support. This includes being the working contact & lead for non-sterile combo-product device verification studies, which will be a larger team effort, including CPDA support colleagues who are more fully dedicated to execution of in-house experiments. The Senior Investigator should have demonstrated excellence in applied experimental research and be a critical analytical thinker & creative problem solver, who can independently apply understanding of packaging materials & function, physical science & testing, and fit-for-purpose & robust analytical development to meet project needs. The Senior Investigator is expected to be or become the company expert for pharm. packaging material knowledge, physical analytical techniques (lab, at-line & in-line) and regulatory requirements/expectations. Finally, the Senior Investigator must be an effective collaborator, who would be energized by a portfolio of active projects across operations and development—with some travel expected.

  • Masters or Ph.D. in engineering, materials science or physics

  • A minimum of two (2) years of industrial experience that includes physical analytical study of pharmaceutical packaging and/or devices

  • Bilingual

Your role at Merck is integral to helping the world meet new breakthroughs that affect generations to come, and we’re counting on your skills and inventiveness to help make meaningful contributions to global medical advancement. At Merck, we’re inventing for life.
