TheProtein Sciences Department of MRL in Palo Alto/South San Francisco is seekinga dynamic and collaborative leader who can bridge the interface of discoverybiology and biologics.  The Executive Director, BiotherapeuticsDiscovery will lead a team of biotherapeutics experts with therapeuticarea focus and experience across immunology and oncology, cardiovascular andmetabolic disease, neurobiology, opthamology, and infectious disease.  The successful candidate provides a primary interfacebetween disease biology discovery groups and biotherapeutics discovery and willcontribute to translational strategy.  S/hewill be an active partner in early biologics discovery and will identify anddrive new opportunities across therapeutic areas in collaboration with biologydiscovery teams.   S/he will enableTIDVAL with assays and tools and promote project progression through aggressiveassessment of multiple approaches to establish the best therapeutic modalityfor target biology.  In collaborationwith biology teams, they will implement the necessary in vitro and in vivo assaysnecessary to select and optimize biotherapeutic candidates across alltherapeutic areas and work with Department leadership to assure theirsuccessful transition and progression into the development pipeline.  This leader will be responsible for ensuringthat biotherapeutics formats and discovery strategies are appropriate for thetarget biology.  The successful candidatewill work in close collaboration with other protein science functions toevaluate and advance therapeutic candidates. They will be part of the senior leadership team within Protein Sciencesand will contribute to strategy and prioritization across the Department. 

Qualifications

Requirements
Anability to build and assess in vitroand in vivo disease models acrossmultiple therapeutic areas.  A deepunderstanding of the principles of biotherapeutics in relationship to diseasemodels.

Contributeexperience with multiple therapeutic modalities including therapeuticantibodies, small molecules, engineered proteins and protein-small moleculeconjugates.  

An ability to assess frommultiple opportunities and modalities, and prioritize/pursue those mostmeaningful to patient health. Willingness to explore novel modalities and uncharted biology.

Demonstratedability to enable discovery research through establishing  the tools and infrastructure necessary to explorenew biology.  Enabling of TIDVALactivities by creating unique resources.  Demonstratedcontributions to new targets and approaches. Open partnership between biology and platform technologies.

Ph.D. in immunology,pharmacology, or related biology area and 10+ years of leading projects andteams.  Must have an understanding of theunique aspects of complex/multi-functional protein therapeutics.  Strong preference for candidates withexperience with multiple therapeutic modalities.

Preferred Experience
Expertisein multiple therapeutic areas including: immunology, metabolic disease, cancer biology, neurobiology, infectiousdiseases and innate immunity.

Understandingof cytokine biology and their role in disease.

Engineering of Fc receptorproperties.
