Research Associate in Chemotactic Nanomedicines

Full Time

The appointment will be on UCL Grade 7. The salary range will be £34,635 to £41,864 per annum, inclusive of London Allowance.

Applications are invited for a Research Associate to work in the Department of Chemistry at UCL’s Bloomsbury Campus, on a research project supervised by Prof Giuseppe Battaglia. The appointee will work on the characterisation of polymersomes for therapeutic and diagnostic applications. This will involve the setting up of advance optical imaging techniques to track nanoparticle propulsion as well as the development of theoretical models to elucidate chemotaxis mechanisms. The project is part of a multidisciplinary effort aimed toward the design of multiplexed chemotactic carriers able to follow glucose gradient with characteristics suitable for clinical translation for the treatment of brain tumours. This will involve collaboration with clinicians, physical biologists, and physicists.

The postholder will be required to carry out research into studying the targeting and trafficking of personalised polymersomes into both blood brain barrier and glioma cells. The appointment is funded by the ERC for 3 years initially.

The successful candidate will hold a PhD (or near to being awarded a PhD) in Soft Matter Physics, Advanced Optics, Photonics, Chemical Engineering, Bioengineering or a relevant discipline. Experience with either optical microscopy or soft matter physics is essential. Experience in active matter is desirable but not essential.  We will accept applications from both engineers and physical scientists as long as they fulfil the essential requirements discussed above. The candidate must demonstrate their contribution to the scientific community, in the form of an appropriate number of publications in prestigious journals, patents, and conferences.

Please note, appointment at Grade 7 is dependent upon having been awarded a PhD; if this is not the case, initial appointment will be at Research Assistant Grade 6B (salary £30,316 - £31,967   per annum, including London Allowance of £3,031) with payment at Grade 7 being backdated to the date of final submission of the PhD thesis.
