The Material Measurement Laboratory of the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) anticipates the need for a Division Chief of its Biosystems and Biomaterials Division (BBD) (https://www.nist.gov/mml/bbd). The BBD has more than 50 permanent scientific and engineering staff and over 30 domestic and international associates. Division permanent staff are primarily PhD-level researchers with expertise in the biosciences and biotechnologies. The division is focused on creating confidence, reproducibility and innovation in the measurements that underpin research in complex biological systems and related technologies. The division’s multidisciplinary technical portfolio includes genomic measurements, synthetic and engineering biology, cell therapies and regenerative medicine, biomaterials, advanced diagnostics, and microbial measurements. The division carries out its mission through fundamental research in measurement science, the development of new measurement technologies, and the deployment of measurement services such as reference materials, reference data, and protocols.
Candidates should have extensive research experience in the biological sciences and direct experience in managing a multidisciplinary scientific and technical workforce with a focus on the biological sciences. It is preferred that candidates have an advanced degree in the biological sciences or biotechnology, but candidates with advanced degrees from other scientific disciplines will be considered if they can demonstrate significant research and management experience specializing in the biosciences. Degrees and experience must be in accordance with OPM qualification standards and candidates must be U.S. citizens.
Interested candidates should submit a Curriculum Vitae (CV) or resume along with a cover letter that in total includes the following information: 1) evidence of outstanding research that has led or can lead to major advances in the areas of biosciences or biotechnology, and can be rated under the provision for highly demanding research positions requiring similar abilities, or show at least 1 year equivalent at the GS-14 level; 2) a list of publications and presentations covering at least the past 5 years showing research experience and expertise in the biological sciences; 3) clearly articulated leadership and management experience, including personnel and financial management of a scientific/technical workforce commensurate to the described position; 4) a list of potential references.
The identified candidate will be hired as a ZP-V (GS-15) equivalent. Depending upon their background, candidates may be hired as a Biologist, ZP-0401, Grade V or as a Supervisory Biologist, ZP-0401, Grade-V, as a Bioengineer, ZP-0858, Grade V or as a Supervisory Bioengineer, ZP-0858, Grade V, or as a Chemist, ZP-1320, Grade V or as a Supervisory Chemist, ZP-1320, Grade V.
The salary range for the position is $131,898 - $164,200 per annum. The principal duties for the division are at the Gaithersburg, MD campus of NIST.
