As a Staff Scientist, Early Target Discovery working on the Early Target team, you will be empowered to design and implement experimental strategies for validation of targets from disease associated SNP's, variants, and genes.   


The Staff Scientist of Early Target Discovery, based in San Diego, is responsible for conducting human genetics follow up work for target identification and validation (TIDVAL) in alignment with Takeda Drug Discovery Unit (DDU) priorities with the goal of resulting in the initiation of formal drug discovery campaigns by Takeda Research. Utilizes cutting edge methods and technologies within Molecular biology, Genomics, and Genetic associations to determine therapeutic direction of target modulation.


  • Design and implement experimental strategies for validation of targets from disease associated SNPs, variants, and genes.
  • Responsible for human genetics follow up work streams in TIDVAL (functional consequences of rare variants, SNPs, splicing, miRNAs)
  • Identify opportunities to collaborate with partners (academic, biotech, and CRO) to enhance in-house capabilities.
  • Represent own research findings to leadership and project teams.
  • Professionally represents the organization in collaborations, partnership discussions, and external conferences.


  • Ph.D. in Genetics or Life Sciences related discipline with 2+ years of experience in biotech industry or academic setting and publication record OR
  • MS in Life Science with 5+ years of relevant experience and publication record.
  • Extensive hands-on experience in some of the techniques: molecular biology, recombinant expression, digital droplet PCR, cis, trans eQTLs, RNAseq, CHIPseq, WGS, and CRISPR gene editing
  • Track record of working on complex problems, and ability to integrate data from multiple disciplines
  • Strong interpersonal, collaboration skills to work in a team-oriented, fast-paced, matrix environment, and the ability to work through conflicts
  • Highly motivated and flexible with a positive can-do attitude
  • Ability to provide novel creative solutions to challenging problems
  • Desire to learn and tackle new challenges and initiatives
  • Working in cold room (4°C)
  • Able to lift or move up to 10 pounds on a regular basis in the course of daily work.
