Group Leader
who is a creative, independent and inspiring lead scientist with leadership capabilities and who increases the gender diversity of the staff

Can you develop a productive and innovative research program and establish an independent research group through a combination of core funding and extramural funding? Can you complement the research program of the NIN by working in close collaboration with other research groups at the institute? And do you have a clear vision on how to approach the current challenges in one of the three neuroscience research fields described below? Then this job may be for you.

Computational Neuroscience: We are looking for a scientist who has a passion and vision for developing mathematical and computational tools to study neural networks and who will develop and implement inventive methods for the analysis and interpretation of high-dimensional data sets. The NIN is home to research groups using the most advanced brain activity measurement techniques generating high-dimensional data, including two-photon calcium imaging, multi-electrode arrays and 7T magnetic resonance images. We therefore offer a unique opportunity to work closely with empirical scientists, shape experimental design and make use of datasets to bring our understanding of the brain to the next level.

Big Data Neuroscience: There is an increasing global collaboration to collect, pool and distribute huge datasets on human genetics, gene expression and brain imaging in order to understand the neurobiological underpinnings of a wide variety of complex traits and phenotypes in health and disease. To bridge these opportunities with current research topics and facilities like the Brain Bank and 7T MRI at the NIN, we are seeking an outstanding scientist who is leading in the innovative use of datasets like the UKBiobank, 23andMeand ENIGMA. The ideal candidate has mathematical, computational, statistical, neurobiological and cognitive-behavioral expertise, as well as technological skills for cluster computing.

Molecular Neuroscience: The research program of the NIN is aimed at understanding how circuits of neurons enable brain functions. The NIN scientists have extensive expertise in animal behavior, electrophysiology and in vivo imaging approaches. We are looking for a neuroscientist who will develop a new molecular research line and enjoys collaborating with the existing research groups. Her/his new research group would use and develop molecular and/or viral approaches for neuronal manipulation, visualization or tracing, to gain new insights into the development or the function of the brain.

Job description
The new group leader has the following responsibilities:

  • She/he coordinates and conducts research into one of the above mentioned fields
  • She/he acquires external research grants
  • She/he supervises PhD students
  • She/he makes an inspiring contribution to The Netherlands Institute for Neuroscience
  • She/he is dedicated to collaborating with the diverse groups at the NIN

Desired skills and experience

  • PhD degree preferably obtained not longer than 10 years ago. We will deduct a 1.5 year period for each child when comparing productivity across candidates to account for the family investment involved in maternity
  • An excellent and demonstrable track record in scientific research, and publications in relevant journals
  • Knowledge of and experience in acquiring external funding for research
  • People leader and excellent communicator

The salary is in accordance with the regulations for academic personnel, and will range from € 67,000 up to a maximum of € 89,000 per year before tax, (including holiday and end of year allowance) based on a full-time appointment, and depending on expertise and previous experience. Gross monthly salaries are in accordance with the Collective Labour Agreement (CAO) for Dutch Universities.
