Merck is currently seeking exceptional synthetic chemists for positions within the West Point, PA Chemistry Department. A successful candidate will be joining multidisciplinary, highly collaborative discovery teams to invent novel medicines with broad deliverables ranging from of innovative synthetic chemistry to analysis of diverse data sets to build structure-activity relationships. The successful candidate will generate novel, testable hypotheses to enable clear decision making for molecule design or route invention.
Furthermore, he/she will help identify and validate new targets through chemistry. Additional responsibilities will include training and mentoring of team members as well as collaborative engagement with the external scientific community. Success across this spectrum of activities will necessitate the application of the latest advances in synthetic and medicinal chemistry and the development of innovative approaches to address new chemistry challenges. To accomplish the above, the successful candidate must have excellent interpersonal, collaboration and communication skills in a team environment.Qualifications
- Ph.D. in chemistry, biochemistry or related field. Anticipated attainment of Ph.D. in 2018 matching noted criteria is also acceptable.
- Experience in synthetic organic chemistry methodology/catalysis, total synthesis, or physical organic chemistry.
- A proven track record of solving complex synthetic chemistry problems.
- Experience in synthesis, purification and analytical characterization including HPLC, MS, NMR, and biophysical methods.
- Ability to mine scientific literature and databases
- Ability to train team members in aspects of chemical synthesis
- Effective communication and collaboration skills in a team environment
