This position will support Merck pre-clinical and clinical vaccine programs in the Vaccine Analytical Department (Vaccine Characterization group).  As a member of the Vaccine Characterization group the Senior Principal Scientist will be responsible for developing and executing in-depth mass spectrometric methods to support advancing vaccine candidates.  The incumbent will evaluate new methodologies to characterization of complex vaccines.  This work will be applicable to many different types of vaccine platforms including nucleotides, live-viruses, recombinant proteins and conjugates.  The Senior Principal Scientist will also manage analytical projects related to developing analytical strategies and timelines.  The Senior Principal Scientist will also be responsible for technical supervision of the mass spectrometry group within the Vaccine Characterization organization.  Hands on experience with many different types of mass spectrometry related tools and software is required.  



  • PhD in Chemistry, Biochemistry, Biology or related field.


  • Experience with GMP or GLP requirements for pharmaceutical development.
  • Hands on experience with multiple types of mass spectrometers (ion traps, triple quadrapole, QTOF, MALDI-TOF, etc.
  • Experience providing technical oversight to other laboratory scientist.
  • Experience with project management related to drug development.
  • Experience developing methods for protein quantitation by mass spectrometry.


  • Experience characterizing nucleotide based products.
  • Experience in proteomics platforms for analysis of complex biologics.
