Scientist IMI Project in Transporter Cell Line Engineering to join the Superti-Furga Lab at CeMM
The Superti-Furga laboratory at CeMM in Vienna is contributing to the scientific fundaments of precision medicine by studying drug action at the systems-level. In recent years, the laboratory has focused on understanding how membrane transporters govern access to nutrients, ions, xenobiotcis and drugs for cells and organisms. Regulation of the function of transporters is integrated with metabolic processes, brokering internal demand and external offer. Specificity, regulation and functional integration of the roughly 1,500 human genes encoding various types of transporters is only poorly understood. The Superti-Furga laboratory is particularly interested in the > 400 members of the Solute Carrier Proteins super group (SLCs), as they contain some highly prominent drug targets and drug transporters, are involved in numerous diseases, but are dramatically understudied (César-Razquin et al. Cell 2015). According to the mission of the laboratory, SLCs can be considered the managers of the interface between chemistry and biology, and between organisms and their environment. Consequently, studying their regulation is of fundamental importance for biology and medicine.
The Innovative Medicine Initiative (IMI) is an EU public-private partnership funding health research and innovation. As part of an IMI-supported effort aiming at “unlocking” the SLC target class and involving a consortium of several leading academic laboratories and pharmaceutical companies, we are currently searching for a highly motivated PhD-level Scientist who wants to contribute to this exciting open science quest involving a large group of scientists and, ultimately, the whole interested scientific community. Your main assignment will be to generate the large battery of engineered cell lines that are the biological tools standing at the beginning of the entire workflow. You will use cutting edge genome engineering technologies. This position offers a nearly perfect mix of organizational/managerial tasks and wet-lab work, and is a fantastic opportunity for scientists with profound knowledge of generation and organization of engineered cell lines, who want to seize the opportunity to create, navigate, integrate, visualize and interpret original data in innovative ways and for a large group of collaborating scientists.
In this role, you will supervise and coordinate a small team of technical assistants and you will help them implement SOPs. To complement our creative group of scientists you should be a team player with strong organization skills who would like to develop his/her management skills and who strives for top performance day by day. If, beyond that, you have a structured and efficient work style and you are eager to team up with experimental scientists in the Superti-Furga laboratory as well as with laboratories that are part of the international network of academic and industrial partners, you are the perfect asset for our team.
Your main tasks and responsibilities include:
- Establishment of a pipeline for the rapid generation of engineered human cell lines (knock-out and over-expression)
- Generation of standard operating procedures (SOPs)
- Characterization of the engineered cell lines
- Organization of the growing cell line collection
- Supervision and management of a small team of technical assistants
- Technology development as team effort
- Training of new lab members
- Perfect record keeping and report writing
- Contribute to expert computational analysis and data visualization
- Presentation at local and international team meetings as well as externally at seminars and conferences
Requirements and desired qualifications:
- PhD degree in biology, chemistry or a medical degree
- Relevant work experience in experimental biomedical research
- Knowledge of mammalian cell culture techniques
- Mastering of molecular biology techniques (PCR, genotyping, immunoblotting, cloning)
- Experience in sequence analysis using basic bioinformatics tools (blast, reading of trace files, TIDE)
- Excellent English skills, both written and spoken, and very good communication skills
- Propensity to be highly accurate and organized
- Structured and efficient work style
- Distinctive social competence
- Experience with viral delivery systems, CRISPR/Cas9 and Flp-In technologies is considered an advantage
- Previous managerial experience is desirable
