This postdoctoral position is a temporary position for up to one year, which may be renewed at Sandia's discretion up to five additional years. The PhD must have been conferred within five years prior to employment.

Individuals in postdoctoral positions may bid on regular Sandia positions as internal candidates, and in some cases may be converted to regular career positions during their term if warranted by ongoing operational needs, continuing availability of funds, and satisfactory job performance.


We are seeking a Postdoctoral Appointee to join a research team that is studying the underlying biophysics of active assembly processes driven by kinesin-microtubule transport. More specifically, this work involves using kinesin transport to actively assemble large-scale networks of lipid/polymer nanotubes and study their dynamic behaviors. Of particular interest is understanding how mechanisms may be designed and integrated into these systems to temporally and spatially control the metastabilities in these systems and achieve pre-designed morphologies.

On any given day, you may be called on to:

  • Develop and characterize the interfacial interactions of biomolecular and synthetic components, and develop an understanding of energy-dissipative self-assembly
  • Communicate research results through high-impact publications and conference presentations


  • PhD, conferred within the past five years, in biophysics, bioengineering, biomaterials, molecular biology, or a related field
  • Experience with optical and high-resolution imaging techniques and data analysis
  • Experience with prokaryotic cell culture, recombinant protein purification, and genetic engineering techniques
  • Good communication skills as evidenced by a history of publication of results in peer-reviewed journals and external presentations at appropriate scientific conferences


  • Experience with microfluidics and microfabrication techniques such as photolithography, soft lithography, microcontact printing, etc.
  • Ability to work both independently and as part of a multidisciplinary team of chemists, engineers, biologists, and computational scientists
  • Experience with electron microscopy of soft materials

Department Description:

The Center for Integrated Nanotechnologies (CINT) Science Department consists of CINT scientific research staff assigned to the Physical, Chemical, & Nanosciences Center at Sandia National Laboratories. CINT is a DOE/Office of Science National User Facility operated jointly by Sandia and Los Alamos National Laboratories with facilities at both Laboratories. Security Clearance:

This position does not currently require a Department of Energy (DOE)-granted security clearance.

Sandia will conduct a pre-employment drug testing, and a pre-employment background review that includes personal reference checks, law enforcement record checks, and employment and education verifications.
