Merck’s success is backed by ethical integrity, forward momentum, and an inspiring mission to achieve new milestones in global healthcare. The Associate Director, Technology Center of Excellence (COE) sits within the COE for Merck’s Strategic Sourcing and Enterprise Services Center of Excellence (SSES). The role reports to the Executive Director, SSES COE and is responsible for developing the technology strategy and managing the associated roadmap to support SSES strategies to manage Meetings, Congresses, Exhibits, Travel and Payment services. He/she will work with global colleagues to identify technology opportunities to improve operational effectiveness in Meetings, Congresses, Exhibits, Travel and Payments and other areas supported by SSES, while meeting Merck’s IT standards and requirements related to all technology matters / applications. The selected candidate will have responsibility for partnering with Merck IT to align on strategic direction and execution of the selected initiatives, and come up with innovative solutions to meet SSES’s goals. The incumbent must work to understand the technology trends in Meetings, Congresses, Exhibits, Travel and Payment services and bring ideas / innovation to the business.
Responsibilities include but are not limited to:
  • Strategy Development – Work with SSES members and cross-functional teams to create technology strategies, which both deliver quick wins and genuine innovative breakthroughs in Meetings, Congresses, Exhibits, Travel and Payments services. 
  • Strategy Implementation – Proactively manage all aspects of technology implementation including entry and exit of suppliers and the resulting complex change management.
  • Data Analytics, Reporting and Actionable Insights – Continuously evaluate various industry technology solutions that deliver actionable business intelligence for Meetings, Congresses, Exhibits, Travel and Payments. Actively participate in relevant industry events.
  • Technology Implementation and Supplier Management – Build relationships, lead team to manage technology implementations and technology supplier performance against requirements, using proven processes to drive the realization of the full value of the key relationships.
  • Sourcing and Contracting – Support sourcing initiatives including RFX, RFP, and negotiations and contracting related to technology solutions to select the right suppliers. Guide and support procurement colleagues with technology subject matter expertise as they execute sourcing initiatives or contracts within the categories of Meetings, Congresses, Exhibits, Travel or Payments.
  • Continuous Improvement – Ensure that technology supplier relationships are set up for future continuous improvement and to lead review processes, which ensure delivery of on-going improvement.
  • Business Requirements and Alignment – Have a keen insight and understanding of the company’s IT, risk, compliance and other related strategies and requirements on a 1-3-5 year horizon and how these impact technology solutions in the Meetings, Congresses, Exhibits, Travel and Payments arena.
  • Results and Performance – The candidate will have strong analytical skills and experience, and be results-oriented.
  • Project and Change Management – Strong project management skills, business analysis skills, data analysis skills and a proven ability to manage change both internally and externally through to successful completion. The candidate will be expected to lead relevant change management at a global level across all divisions and regions. S/he will be expected to develop and execute project plans; develop, manage and control schedule, budget, scope, quality; identify and manage project risks and issues.
  • Team, Resource Management – Directly and indirectly manage internal and external resources, including leading teams and coordinating resources across different regions, Merck IT and third party resources.

  • Bachelor's Degree required.

  • Minimum of seven (7) years of relevant work experience, with demonstrated expertise in the technology strategy and roadmap development.
  • Proven success working with and deploying IT solutions.
  • Strong analytical skills, ability to analyze large complex data sets to derive relevant intelligence in developing solutions, strategies and supporting negotiations.
  • Proven success in leading organizations through change management.
  • Strong communications (written and verbal) and influencing skills at senior levels.
  • Proven ability to lead and collaborate with a wide variety of individuals, including senior management, stakeholders, team members, other departments and suppliers.
  • Proven ability to effectively prioritize and execute tasks in a dynamic environment.
  • Results-orientation with the proven ability to develop plans and implement them.
  • Proven track record of analytical skills, problem solving and attention to detail.
  • Established record in managing multiple and competing priorities.
  • Solid business acumen, proven technology skills, exceptionally good listening skills.

  • Bachelor’s degree in software engineering, computer science or related field preferred.
  • Master’s Degree, MBA or relevant certifications is a plus.
  • Experience in implementing and managing technologies related to Strategic Meetings Management programs, Travel programs, Congress programs. Experience with industry tools like cVent, Domo, Spotfire, Concur, etc.
  • Green Belt or other Six Sigma Certification.
