Merck Research Laboratories Pharmacokinetics, Pharmacodynamics, and Drug Metabolism (PPDM) Department has a Senior Scientist level position available in West Point, PA for a highly talented and motivated individual.  This opportunity will involve using state-of-the-art, innovative technologies to investigate the metabolism, catabolism, trafficking and pharmacokinetics of therapeutic peptides and proteins. The responsibilities will involve designing, planning and executing new experimental approaches for the qualitative analysis of therapeutic peptide and protein metabolism in support of preclinical studies using advanced analytical technologies. The candidate will have a unique opportunity to develop innovative approaches that will then be applied to projects in support of Merck's development pipeline. Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Developing novel sample preparation approaches for peptide and protein analysis
  • Developing robust low flow Liquid Chromatography High-Resolution Mass Spectrometry (LC-HRMS) approaches for peptide and protein therapeutic metabolite identification
  • Evaluating and developing innovative software approaches for the rapid analysis of therapeutic peptide and protein metabolite data
  • Collaboration with bioanalytical, PPDM and discovery team members to interrogate pharmacokinetic and metabolism related questions in order to advance discovery programs
  • Designing new experimental approaches utilizing advanced analytical technologies to ultimately impact Merck’s therapeutic peptide and protein programs



  • Bachelor’s degree with a minimum of 7 years relevant experience OR a Master’s degree with a minimum of 4 years relevant experience OR a Ph.D. Appropriate subjects for highest degree include analytical chemistry, biochemistry, chemistry, pharmacology or chemical engineering.


  • Experience in the handling and sample preparation of peptides and proteins from biological matrices
  • High-Resolution Mass Spectrometry of biomolecules (for example peptides, proteins and/or oligonucleotides)
  • Proven experience using software for the analysis of peptide and protein sequencing
  • Method development with low flow chromatography (micro-flow and nano-flow)
  • Scientific collaboration and leadership skills


  • Advanced mass spectrometry techniques such as SWATH, Top-Down protein sequencing and ion mobility
  • Software programming experience or informatics
  • Biomolecule catabolism and trafficking experience
  • Knowledge of the PK, ADME and clearance mechanisms of peptides and proteins
  • Ability to leverage automated liquid handling for sample preparation
  • Track record of innovative problem solving and method development
  • Strong verbal and excellent written communication skills
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail
