Merck’s success is backed by ethical integrity, forward momentum, and an inspiring mission to achieve new milestones in global healthcare. The Director, Vaccine Confidence will support the communications, marketing and commercial teams with development and implementation of integrated, comprehensive communications strategies and programs to raise awareness and confidence in the role of vaccines in safely and effectively improving global health while supporting MSD/ Merck's expanding global vaccines business.  
  • Develop and execute communications strategies to reach key audiences regarding how vaccines safely and effectively improve public health while demonstrating MSD/Merck’s access, policy and partnership programs designed to impact population health
  • Working closely with Public, Policy and Medical Affairs to develop communications programs and support overall broader campaigns to elevate awareness of the value of vaccines to the public, HCPs, policymakers and advocacy through branded and unbranded communications and mobilization of external allies globally; provide support to regions and local markets to deliver locally relevant campaigns
  • Strengthen awareness of the significant impact of vaccines while using scientific data and experience to reassure key audiences of the safety of vaccines when used appropriately through digital and traditional media channels, advocacy partnerships and event activation
  • Provide direct support and education to and collaborate with Global and regional brand marketing and communications teams related to activities designed to elevate understanding of the value of vaccines
  • Lead the social media listening program across 20 countries and across vaccines portfolio and ensure use to guide appropriate engagement and rapid response as needed
  • Engage appropriate stakeholders, including media and government affairs, to communicate unmet needs around vaccination, importance of US population health coverage and to seed the solution provided by Merck Vaccines
  • Collaborate with local partners and internal and external stakeholders on groundwork preparation and execution of program launches, milestone and data announcements
  • Utilize multiple channels, including events, direct-to-stakeholder briefings, media outreach, and internal engagement to reach stakeholders in compelling and appropriate ways
  • Identify relevant regional conferences and congresses; coordinate speaking opportunities, develop materials, coordinate meetings with key influencers, conduct pre- and post-conference outreach, and execute wraparound communication to reach relevant stakeholders
  • Manage directly or indirectly with PR agencies and manage related program budgets to implement comprehensive communications plans.
  • Work with policy and medical affairs to create materials, messages and tools for building vaccines confidence.
  • Coordinate communications activities and shares best practices internally.
NOTE:  Travel for this position is estimated to be 30%




Required Education:
  • A Bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution is required
  • Required Experience and Skills:
  • Minimum of 8 years of experience in public relations and working with business leaders internationally
  • Proven track record of building relationships with thought leaders in public health, advocacy and media
  • Strong digital and traditional media expertise
  • Candidates should have significant experience leading media, advocacy and partnership programs on behalf of large, global corporations
  • Experience working on global initiatives and with colleagues in regions around the world
  • Ability to work successfully across functional areas and in a matrixed organization
  • A proven track record of developing, guiding and executing strategy to support the business
  • Strong project management skills
  • The ability to educate and build capabilities within teams
  • A willingness and interest in traveling an estimated 30% of the time
  • Ability to confidently lead and provide expert counsel to support the goals of the business Ability to handle crisis communications and short-term communications objectives
  • In addition, successful candidate will have:
  • Excellent presentation and persuasiveness
  • Excellent organizational, written and oral communication skills
  • Exceptional budget management skills
  • Ability to manage pressure, meet deadlines and monitor and evaluate results is essential 
  • Preferred:
  • Candidates who have a Master’s or advanced degree, along with experience in vaccines, pharmaceutical, or health care, preferred
  • A background in applying behavioral science to public health communications is desired.
  • Agency experience may also be relevant
