Merck’s success is backed by ethical integrity, forward momentum, and an inspiring mission to achieve new milestones in global healthcare. The Director of Vaccine Communications for HPV and Pediatrics will support the communications, research, and commercial teams with development and implementation of integrated, comprehensive communications strategies and programs in support of the adolescent and pediatric arms of Merck's US and global vaccines business. 
  • Create and execute comprehensive external communications programs in the US and for global market leads in support of Merck’s HPV franchise and pediatric vaccines brands
  • Develop communications strategies for both the HPV franchise and pediatric brands to ladder up to initiatives to support vaccine confidence
  • Strengthen awareness among key audiences of the importance of vaccines through targeted media outreach programs, executive speaking opportunities and creation of research-based infrastructure and materials
  • Create campaigns and ongoing news flow to continually reinforce the value of vaccines and Merck vaccines among the public, SLs, healthcare professionals, payors and advocacy partners
  • Utilize multiple channels, including events, direct-to-stakeholder briefings, targeted media outreach, social and digital, and internal engagement to reach stakeholders in compelling and appropriate ways
  • Stay up-to-date on trends in consumer engagement, digital activations and media and pop culture around the world to influence new approaches to reaching parents of children as well as adolescents and young adults at risk for HPV related diseases
  • Monitor the environment through social listening tools and media monitoring to identify opportunities to insert HPV positioning and pediatric brands into the social discourse while also having an ear to the ground on emerging issues
  • Identify relevant regional conferences and congresses; coordinate speaking opportunities, develop materials, coordinate meetings with key influencers, conduct pre- and post-conference outreach, and execute wraparound communication to reach relevant stakeholders
  • Create external partnerships with key external organizations and experts in support of business and reputational goals
  • Support new product launches and current product portfolios
  • Provide direct support and education to and collaborate with brand marketing teams; support marketing teams and participate on cross-functional teams to advise on key communications and business issues, engaging senior global communications staff as necessary
  • Serve as counselor, leader and key resource for division issues and external events
  • Coordinate communications activities and shares best practices internally
  • Manage directly or indirectly with PR agencies and manage related program budgets to implement comprehensive communications plans
  • Manage team members to ensure appropriate work flow and appropriate cross-functional team engagement

Required Education:
  • A Bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution is required.
  • Required Experience and Skills:
  • Minimum of 8 years of experience in public relations/communications and working with business leaders internationally
  • Candidates should have significant experience leading media, social media and global communications programs on behalf of large, global corporations or institutions.
  • Ability to confidently lead and provide expert counsel to support the goals of the business
  • Ability to work successfully across teams and reporting structures in a matrix environment 
  • Proven ability to articulate and lead a long term strategic communications platform that builds and supports the business
  • Ability to handle crisis communications and short-term communications objectives
  • In addition, successful candidate will have:
  • Excellent presentation and persuasiveness.
  • Excellent organizational, written and oral communication skills
  • Exceptional budget management skills
  • Ability to manage pressure, meet deadlines and monitor and evaluate results is essential
  • Preferred:
  • Candidates who have a Master’s or advanced degree, along with experience in vaccines, pharmaceutical, or health care, is preferred
  • US market experience and vaccines experience is highly preferred
  • Agency experience may also be relevant
