Scientist or Technical Scientist at DCOP, JAMSTEC

Department of Coupled Ocean-Atmosphere-Land Processes Research (DCOP), JAMSTEC, is soliciting applications for Scientist or Technical Scientist. The successful applicant will conduct research on the following themes.

Research description
DCOP conducts observations using a research vessel and land-based sites in the tropics to study weather and climate systems including the Madden–Julian Oscillation and the monsoon, which greatly impact the mid-latitudes. The successful applicant will be expected to study research topics including, but not limited to, such phenomena, especially from the perspective of ocean–atmosphere–land interactions.

Although applicants are not required to have any direct observation experience, we welcome applicants who have an enthusiasm for joining observation project.

Job Type

Scientist: To contribute to the Agency, a Scientist should be able to perform world-leading research as an independent scientist and share the results through scientific publications.

Technical Scientist: To contribute to the Agency, a Technical Scientist is expected to take a leading role in research, technology development, and technology innovation.

*There may be a change in affiliation in the case of reorganization of the Agency.

*At the time of hiring, the position (Scientist or Technical Scientist) will be determined in accordance with JAMSTEC's bylaws

Requirements

Scientist: The successful applicant must have completed a Ph.D. and have a strong enough record to be a scientist in a closely related research field.

Technical Scientist: The successful applicant must have completed a Ph.D. and have a strong enough record to be a technical scientist in a closely related research field.

[Working Conditions and Contract Period]

(1) Number of positions: 1 position for a Scientist or Technical Scientist

(2) Type of contract:  Tenure-track fixed-term employee

(3) Working Hours: Discretionary labor system

(4) Contract Period: July 1, 2018 to March 31, 2023.

*Appointment date is negotiable.

*1 contract period is a maximum of 5 fiscal years. The contract period will not be renewed.

*In accordance with JAMSTEC's bylaws, on reaching the age of 65 years during an employed fiscal year, the contract period will expire at the end of the same fiscal year. This bylaw may change.

*After undergoing an evaluation during the period of employment, the contract could be modified to one without termination (termination of employment would be at the end of the fiscal year in which the employee reaches the age of 60, or 65 if the employee is rehired after his/her retirement). For details on this system, please contact Human Resources Division.

Salary

Annual salary (paid in 1/12 equal monthly payments)

*Salary will be competitive in accordance with JAMSTEC's bylaws, with consideration of the academic qualifications and demonstrated research skills of the applicant.

*There are no bonus and retirement allowance.
